Farewell To Stan

Steve Staunton

The curtain fell on Steve Staunton’s international management career in the wee hours of this morning. The ex-Red defender managed 17 games in charge of Ireland but a a series of bad results and the failure of our national team once again to fail to qualify for a major competition brought about the end of his reign before the current Euro 2008 campaign finishes.

Ex-Red and Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has been put in the frame for the job. Credit to Stan, he tried to play things his own way but between both himself and the FAI it just wasn’t working.

The Mirror gets my headline of the day award with “What A Waste Of 2 Years”. Best of luck to whoever lands themselves with the Irish post in the future, they’ve got some challenge ahead of them to repair the damage of the last two years.
