Live: Porto 1 - 1 Liverpool (Kuyt, 17)

September 18, 2007

Dirk Kuyt makes it 1-1, great time for Liverpool to score, just ten minutes after Porto opened their account with a penalty, Kuyt rising up to head in to the Porto net off the back of a free kick from Steve Finnan.

Live: Penalty Given To Porto, Porto Lead 1-0

September 18, 2007

The fourth penalty against Liverpool this season has just been given, Porto piling on serious early pressure, Reina the culprit in this one.

No mistake made from the spot by the Porto skipper, lashing the ball straight down the middle. First blood goes to Porto puts the pressure firmly on Liverpool to settle into the game and get on the scoreboard.

Don’t forget no English team has ever beaten Porto in the city…

Liverpool Face Porto Tonight, Back To Square One

September 18, 2007

LIVERPOOL FACE PORTO tonight in the Champions League, right back where we belong. With Crouch and Voronin having started at the weekend against Portsmouth I would expect to see either a Torres/Voronin or Torres/Kuyt partnership to start tonight against Porto. While Torres is likely to feature, with Gerrard also back starting in midfield, injuries mean that Momo Sissoko, Harry Kewell and John Arne Riise won’t feature in Champions League action tonight.

It will be interesting to see what Quaresma can do tonight, his name long having been touted around the halls of Anfield this summer but he’ll be up against Mascherano in the middle of the park and a back line thats keeping Liverpool in unbeaten form.

We made a good start to the league campaign but this is different - totally different, as last year proved. If we’re to make our mark in Europe yet again then we’re back to square one tonight and need to kick things off once again.

I’ll be delighted though if Fabio Aurelio gets some time on the pitch tonight, such an up-and-down season last year with injuries. More on the team and pre-game news closer to kick off.

Its A Funny Old Game, Drawing With Portsmouth

September 17, 2007

Its a funny old game - football. Drawing with Portsmouth revealed that. We knew going into the game that Fratton Park was a bit of a “bogey” ground for Liverpool but at the end of the day its Portsmouth who go home smiling, kicking themselves that they didn’t get all three points - thanks in large part to the penalty heroics once again of Pepe Reina.

I’ve also noticed that after a 0-0 game it takes me a bit longer to getting a game reflection or review online, usually because I’m left scratching my head after a goalless draw. The first half produced nothing to write home about, and being honest I didn’t find anything tantalising about the second half either.

The plus of course is that Liverpool remain unbeaten albeit having dropped from the top of the Premier League to slip behind Arsenal and surprise-surprise Manchester City, who have enjoyed four wins out of six under Sven Eriksson.

It was obvious in the first half that we needed the pace and energy of Gerrard and Torres on the pitch from the start, both of whom kicked things off on the bench but made appearances for the last 25 minutes or so of the second half, yet to no avail. The important thing is that we didn’t lose the game and walked away with a point but nobody likes to go away on a goalless draw when you know there’s three points there for the taking.

Onwards towards Porto on Tuesday.

Live: Portsmouth 0 - 0 Liverpool (Half Time)

September 15, 2007

Half time at Fratton Park, nothing to write home about for Liverpool in terms of attacking chances but they’ve been good at keeping Porstmouth out. Highlight of the half being Reina’s penalty save with Portsmouth awarded a penalty after Arbeloa was judged to have fouled Sean Davis in the area, a yellow card going Xabi Alonso’s way for protesting.

I wouldn’t settle for the single point in this game when there’s three there for the taking so I’m expecting to see each of Gerrard, Torres and Babel introduced in the second half to get an injection of pace and finishing into the game.

Live: Portsmouth 0 - 0 Liverpool (Missed Penalty)

September 15, 2007

Xabi Alonso has been booked for protesting the linesman’s decision, Arbeloa tugged Kanu’s jersey in the box and Kanu has missed the subsequent penalty, not awarded at first by referee Mike Riley.

Jose Reina to the rescue again.

Gerrard, Torres Start On Bench Against Portsmouth

September 15, 2007

Here’s the Liverpool team against Portsmouth, kicking off in about 20 minutes time.

One the pitch we’ve got Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Arbeloa, Pennant, Sissoko, Alonso, Benayoun, Andriy Voronin and Peter Crouch. Steven Gerrard is fit but starts on the bench after a busy week for England (and recovering from a broken toe). Alongside him are Itandje, Sami Hyypia, Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel.

Internationals Over, Back To Business For Liverpool (vs Portsmouth)

September 15, 2007

The Euro 2008 qualifiers are out of the way once again so its back to business today for Liverpool as the Reds take on Portsmouth in the lunchtime game at Fratton Park. Liverpool last met Portsmouth in the Asia Trophy with Portsmouth getting the upper hand on penalties. We’re currently top of the table with a game in hand over Chelsea (4th) and Man Utd (8th) so another three points and an away victory today would be more than welcome.

There’s no word on the team sheet yet this morning but I would expect both Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard to take part in the game, as would most Liverpool supporters.

I reckon Liverpool to win, 2-0 the scoreline.
