Let The Games Begin - Aston Villa Up First
August 11, 2007
We’re finally here. I swear to God though, it seems like only yesterday the season was wrapping up, transfer rumours were starting to filter through about potential buys and sales but now look at us! A terrific pre-season record, 100% over 90 minutes anyway (factoring out the penalties loss to Porstmouth in the Asia Trophy), the record-breaking arrivial of Fernando Torres, the crafty free signing of Andriy Voronin, saying hello to two new wingers, waving goodbye to two more….
Now is the time for the games to begin.
I’m asking for a win on the opening day of the season and I’m expecting one as well. In the recent run of form Liverpool look ripe for the. Whatever the combination Rafa opts for up front this evening it would be a pure wonder if Liverpool fail to find the back of the net.
We haven’t done it well in recent seasons (opening draw against Spurs two years ago, opening draw against Sheffield United last season) and if we’re to have a crack at the top two this season - which we’re more than capable of doing - then this evening’s opening game of the season against Aston Villa has to produce a win for Liverpool.
Interesting fact too as I watch Sky (Soccer Saturday on TV at present) - Liverpool will hit 1,000 Premier League points this afternoon with a draw. Personally, I’d rather hit 1,002 points this afternoon, wouldn’t you?
I’d expect Torres to start up front with Kuyt, maybe see Peter Crouch introduced in the second half to shake things up, Benayoun to put in a bit of pace from the start, possibly matched up with Harry Kewell on the other flank but the team sheet is yet to be announced.
Let the games begin - bring on Aston Villa (even with Scott Carson bound to be sitting in the stands with an Aston Villa jersey on under his jacket) and bring on the perfect start to the 07/08 Premier League campaign.

Voronin Tops LiverpoolFC.tv Poll
August 8, 2007
While Fernando Torres topped the LiverpoolAccess.com poll for favourite summer signing, Andriy Voronin made the biggest impression of the pre-season as the Ukranian free-transfer scored two of Liverpool’s seventeen pre-season goals while getting run-outs in five games - this according to LiverpoolFC.tv.
The results this morning show Voronin miles ahead in the charts, taking 62% of the total votes cast.
Can’t say that I’d argue against it though, for me he’s been a shining light in pre-season and I really hope he can keep up his A-game when the season opens against Aston Villa this coming weekend.

Poll: Fernando Torres Is Your Favourite Summer Signing
August 5, 2007
Well, I’ve closed the latest LiverpoolAccess.com poll, deciding to leave it run until there was at least 1,000 votes to get a fairly even spread, the poll exceeding those numbers by 115 in the last day or so. The voting is closed and the results are in. Back on July 19th I asked you who your favourite signing of the summer thus far has been and with some great matches having been played in preseason so far, the four major signings have had plenty of chances to impress.
So, the results…
- Fernando Torres 53% (593 votes)
- Ryan Babel 14% (160 votes)
- Yossi Benayoun 12% (137 votes)
- Andriy Voronin 20% (225 votes)
No surprises as our record signing of Fernando Torres tops the poll a good 33% ahead of Andriy Voronin (20%), who has made a great impression in pre-season. Ryan Babel picks it up in third with 14% of the overal vote while Yossi Benayoun trails just behind him at 12%.
Another poll on the way shortly.

He’s only on the pitch about three and Steven Gerrard has unleashed a wicked curling shot over the head of the ‘keeper and into the Shenhua top left corner. Savage stuff from Gerrard, one to look for on the highlights later tonight. Quality stuff altogether, nice to get the second goal in.

Sissoko and Crouch are making way for Steven Gerrard and Ryan Babel, Babel looking like he’s switched to the wing with Yossi Benayoun going up front while Steven Gerrard joins Lucas Leiva in centre midfield.

The crowd are booing the sight of Ryan Babel warming up - the Dutch crowd that is. Doesn’t matter what club you play for I guess - once a rival, always a rival.

Live: Liverpool 1 - 0 Shanghai Shenhua (Half Time)
August 3, 2007
Good start by Liverpool in this game with a first half behind us now that produced Fernando Torres’ debut goal. Benayoun set Torres free into the right of the box to flick over the ‘keeper and into the back of the net. Liverpool have had a few chances, nothing major, Crouch coming close with a good 25-yard drive late in the half after Fernando Torres had a penalty claim turned down.
Its been good overall for Liverpool so far but I’d expected fairly wholesale changes in the second half, Mascherano and Kuyt likely to feature along with Ryan Babel.
Either way, nice to see Torres getting his first goal for the club.

Still 1-0 with just five minutes left to play in the first half. Not too much in the line of chances from either side in honesty, nothing to throw your heart in your mouth just yet. Loudest cheer of the half following Torres’ goal was reserved for Dirk Kuyt, the Dutchman getting a standing ovation coming out to warm up in the De Kuip stadium.
Kuyt certainly going to feature in the second half, wouldn’t be surprised if he pulled one out of the bag as well.

Fernando Torres has made it 1-0, scoring his first Liverpool goal on his first Liverpool start. Yossi Benayoun found Torres with a serious through-ball before Torres flicked over the ‘keeper to send Liverpool fans into raptures.
