Poll: A Realistic Finish For Liverpool In The Premier League This Season?
August 17, 2007
Time for the third LiverpoolAccess.com poll where this time I’m asking what is a realistic finish for Liverpool in the league this season? Early days yet but we’ve opened the account for 07/08 with a nice away win against Villa and confidence should be high going into the Chelsea game this weekend after beating Toulouse midweek in the Champions League.
United have stuttered on their start - no way they were expecting draws against Reading and Portsmouth - while Chelsea are still firing on all cylinders and firing from new angles too.
Winners, runners up, third or fourth - or even outside the top four (God forbid). Have your say by voting on the poll available on the LiverpoolAccess.com homepage or click here to open the voting in a new window (if you’re in an RSS feed etc.)

European Campaign Off To A Winning Start - Bloody Great
August 16, 2007
Yesterday we needed to make a mark on foreign soil and take three points from the Champions League third round qualifier against Toulouse and we did just that - thanks to Andriy Voronin’s wondergoal.
Reports had suggested before the game (yesterday morning) that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres alike would have no part to play but Gerrard started on the pitch leading by example and Torres made it to the bench. Gerrard had his goal opportunities while on the pitch, just missing out with a 20-yard free kick in the opening minutes of the game while blasting over close to the half hour mark after some good build up play between himself, Finnan, Crouch and Ryan Babel.
Liverpool’s only goal of the game - the only goal of the game - came through Andriy Voronin, the number 10 taking the ball so calmly on his chest to turn and shoot from near 30 yards out on his right foot and blast one into the top corner.
Weather-wise things looked incredibly hot on the pitch, the noise and heat getting to the squad by the second half. Sissoko arrived on the pitch in place of Gerrard after an hour or so while Fernando Torres made an appearance 12 minutes from the end, at this stage Liverpool were visibly trying to slow the game down so not to wear themselves out.
Full time whistle goes and Liverpool have their Champions League campaign off to a winning start, further providing a great boost ahead of the Chelsea encounter this coming weekend. Hopefully there’ll be more of the same on the turn leg at the end of the month.

Live: Toulouse 0 - 1 Liverpool (Voronin - Halftime)
August 15, 2007
I’m back in time for the second half of the game and just as I walk in there’s Andriy Voronin lashing the ball into the back of the net. Perfect time for Liverpool to score (and nice bet if you took Voronin to score first at 6/1). Peter Crouch picked up on nice ball up the pitch from Steve Finnan to flick on for Voronin, the Ukranian firing into the back of the net from outside the box altogether. Great chance for Liverpool, great goal and great amunition going into the second half.

Toulouse vs Liverpool (Team News)
August 15, 2007
Here’s the team for today’s game…
Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Arbeloa, Benayoun, Gerrard, Mascherano, Babel, Voronin, Crouch
One the bench are Itandje, Agger, Riise, Torres, Alonso, Kuyt, Sissoko.
Figured Voronin would start, nice to see Crouch up front as well but surprised (after the radio reports this morning) to see Gerrard on the pitch. Bring it on.

Toulouse vs Liverpool Today (Champions League)
August 15, 2007
The Reds are in France for today’s very early Champions League kick off against Toulouse, the game getting underway at 3:30 this afternoon. Toulouse did well at the weekend, beating current French Ligue 1 champions Lyon and Rafa Benitez seems quite keen to rest Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres given the upcoming weekend clash with Chelsea.
Gerrard admits Liverpool haven’t done too well in recent years at this stage…
We’ve not played particularly well in these qualifiers in previous years. With all due respect to some of the opponents we’ve had, we’ve always been able to get away with just doing enough without ever coming close to being at the top of our game.
Well, thats got to change today. Whether Gerrard and Torres play or not is irrelevant - the work needs to be done in the first leg, get the away goals, make the impression and make the return trip to Anfield towards the end of the month that bit easier. We’re off the back of a great pre-season and have the league campaign off to a winning start. Sure as hell would be nice to see that continue into the Champions League as well.
At present Paddy Power have Liverpool at 8/11 favourites to win the game with home boys Toulouse at 4/1. A 2-0 win for Liverpool would be nice, something I fancy anyway, thats priced at 6/1 but even at a 0-0 draw you’ll get 13/2. I’d expect Andriy Voronin to feature this afternoon and he’s priced 13/2 for first scorer.
The game should be covered on Setanta Sports and you’ll be able to follow the action on LiverpoolFC.tv and if at all possible here on LiverpoolAccess.com.

International Retirement A Certainty For Jamie Carragher
August 15, 2007
If you’ve been following the news this morning you’ll see that Steve McClaren has announced that there’s no going back for Jamie Carragher on his decision to enter international retirement. That decision being Jamie’s of course and not McClaren’s. Its a damn shame as he’s most deserving of a regular starting place in the English squad but such is not the case.

So, We Beat Aston Villa
August 14, 2007
We beat Aston Villa on Saturday and we actually won the opening game of the season - thats what you call starting off on the right foot. Sure enough, Steven Gerrard might have left it late to flight in a pure-precision free kick in the top right corner of the net but we came away with the points and that is what counts.
I’ve held off writing some sort of a match report as I a) didn’t see the match and b)haven’t had a chance to sit down and watch the highlights, bar the video posted of Gerrard’s goal (which must be updated, the video was pulled).
Hopefully there’ll be more of the same this coming Wednesday against Toulouse (tomorrow) so we can cement our rightful place in the Champions League proper. Then, its off to Chelsea. Oh bring it on.

Kuyt And Torres Start Against Aston Villa
August 11, 2007
There’ll be no live-blogging this one I’m afraid due to another commitment but I will say that before the game kicks off (in under an hour’s time) it is great to see Torres and Kuyt starting up front, as I expected they would.
The Liverpool team against Aston Villa on the road for the first Premier League game of the 07/08 campaign looks as follows…
Pepe Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa, Jamie Carragher, Daniel Agger, Steve Finnan, John Arne Riise, Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso, Jermaine Pennant, Dirk Kuyt, Fernando Torres.
On the bench are new signing Charles Itandje, Sami Hyypia, Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel, Momo Sissoko.
No place at all for Harry Kewell, Javier Mascherano, Yossi Benayoun but then again we do have a trip to Toulouse to cater for before opening up in Anfield against Chelsea. Here’s to a Liverpool win this evening five years since we’ve done it on the opening day!
