Let The Games Begin - Aston Villa Up First
We’re finally here. I swear to God though, it seems like only yesterday the season was wrapping up, transfer rumours were starting to filter through about potential buys and sales but now look at us! A terrific pre-season record, 100% over 90 minutes anyway (factoring out the penalties loss to Porstmouth in the Asia Trophy), the record-breaking arrivial of Fernando Torres, the crafty free signing of Andriy Voronin, saying hello to two new wingers, waving goodbye to two more….
Now is the time for the games to begin.
I’m asking for a win on the opening day of the season and I’m expecting one as well. In the recent run of form Liverpool look ripe for the. Whatever the combination Rafa opts for up front this evening it would be a pure wonder if Liverpool fail to find the back of the net.
We haven’t done it well in recent seasons (opening draw against Spurs two years ago, opening draw against Sheffield United last season) and if we’re to have a crack at the top two this season - which we’re more than capable of doing - then this evening’s opening game of the season against Aston Villa has to produce a win for Liverpool.
Interesting fact too as I watch Sky (Soccer Saturday on TV at present) - Liverpool will hit 1,000 Premier League points this afternoon with a draw. Personally, I’d rather hit 1,002 points this afternoon, wouldn’t you?
I’d expect Torres to start up front with Kuyt, maybe see Peter Crouch introduced in the second half to shake things up, Benayoun to put in a bit of pace from the start, possibly matched up with Harry Kewell on the other flank but the team sheet is yet to be announced.
Let the games begin - bring on Aston Villa (even with Scott Carson bound to be sitting in the stands with an Aston Villa jersey on under his jacket) and bring on the perfect start to the 07/08 Premier League campaign.
