Liverpool Beat Toulouse In Convincing Form
August 29, 2007
I’ve been trying to regain a sense of normality after my holiday away last week but arriving home last night to the last three minutes of the Liverpool game was a bit of an awakening - where did we pull 4-0 out of?
There was great talk before the game about the new found strength in depth of the Liverpool squad, not having to worry that Gerrard and Carragher were missing for a night. Well, Dirk Kuyt and co certainly rang true on that one, leaving Toulouse for dead in a 4-0 annihilation at Anfield last night.
Peter Crouch showed great form last night having missed the previous two games and made it 1-0 with 19 minutes done on the clock. Sami Hyypia, wearing the armband in place of both Gerrard and Carragher, shook off his broken nose to head home at the start of the second half before Dirk Kuyt fired not one, but two goals in the last few minutes of the game to leave the Reds with a 4-0 win on the night and a 5-0 win overall.
I figured we’d have the beating of Toulouse at Anfield, slightly disappointed we couldn’t widen the scoreline in the first leg, but little did I think we would do it so convincingly last night. Javier Mascherano, Yossi Benayoun made great impressions on the night. Sebastian Leto picked up a debut for Liverpool as did Lucas Leiva who replaced Momo Sissoko midway through the second half.
The result of course puts us into the draw held tomorrow when we learn who we’ll be grouped up against this year. Rangers too have made it into the group stage where we should be joined by Arsenal as well with the Gunners on track for qualification tonight. I sure am looking forward to the draw tomorrow though.
And to finally regaining a sense of normality!

Gabriel Paletta Heads Heads To Argentina
August 26, 2007
There’s one thing about Rafa Benitez - if he’s not going to use you, he’s not going to hang on to you. Another of Benitez signings, Gabriel Paletta, has been given permission to join Boca Juniors. He scored on his debut against Reading but just made eight appearances on the pitch and so Liverpool have decided to cash in their chips.
Paletta joins Craig Bellamy, Scott Carson, Djibril Cisse, Jerzy Dudek, Robbie Fowler, Luis Garcia, Danny Guthrie, Nikolay Mihaylov, Florent S. Pongolle, Bolo Zenden, in the list of players who have either departed Liverpool or left on loan this summer.

Live: Sunderland 0 - 2 Liverpool (Voronin, 87)
August 25, 2007
87 minutes gone in the game, just about over and Andriy Voronin has made it 2-0 with another great goal build up involving new boys Ryan Babel, Fernando Torres and finally Voronin who fired past Craig Gordon on his right foot. Great 3 points for Liverpool.

Live: Sissoko Makes His Mark At Sunderland
August 25, 2007
I’ve been away all week thanks to The Devious Theatre Company but dropping into the match it looks like Momo Sissoko has bagged his first goal for Liverpool in a great move involving Xabi Alonso, Jermaine Pennant, Andriy Voronin and finally Sissoko. It isn’t for lack of trying on his part and I’m delighted to see that he’s finally - finally - found the net.
The goal arrived just under ten minutes before half time.

Liverpool vs Chelsea Today
August 19, 2007
Well it doesn’t get much bigger than this for the opening day of the season and of course, I’m not going to be around to witness it (though I’ll be tracking it by mobile the whole way through the 90 minutes, keeping up via radio and SMS).
Thanks to the Champions League qualifiers last week the West Ham game that was originally set for the opening Anfield clash of the season was moved meaning we host Chelsea this afternoon and there really is no better way to start off. Bad blood has been building between Chelsea and Liverpool over the past few seasons, thanks largely in part to Liverpool gaining the upper hand repeatedly over Chelsea in the Champions League, Luis Garcia ruining things for Jose Mourmoanio and of course that terrific win in January of this year.
As with every Liverpool match there’s no promises being made about who will be starting up front and it wouldn’t surprise me if Benitez opts for Kuyt and Crouch to start up front with Torres getting introduced in the second half while I would expect Ryan Babel to be making his Anfield debut today with both Yossi Benayoun and Jermaine Pennant finding time on the pitch, Pennant having a decent performance record against Chelsea.
Steven Gerrard is set to play through the pain barrier as well after fracturing a toe against Toulouse while on the Chelsea side of the fence it looks like John Terry will return to the squad, both captains being risked in today’s clash.
Chelsea haven’t lost in the league since the defeat at Anfield last year and have also won five of their six league games in the Mourinho era against Liverpool. BBC are great for facts like that. One fact that isn’t mentioned though is that both sides are changed teams and a much stronger Liverpool who showed no real signs of stuttering in pre-season are on home soil. Not to put the ball in Chelsea’s court or anyuthing but on a whole I think they’re at a disadvantage starting off today at Anfield.
Spirits are supercharged at Liverpool and there’s been a great “fear no one” attitude building of late. With the bulk of the squad and new signings on full fitness, barring Steven Gerrard, Liverpool have the extra depth and strength needed to make certain of a victory today. Whether we’re in for a goal fest or a hard slog to get a 1-0 victory I’m calling on a Liverpool home win today to really throw the gauntlet down to both Chelsea and Man United.
For the sake of building up steam at the start of the season it needs a serious doing.
Kick off is in just over 90 minutes time, coverage on Setanta, Sky and LiverpoolFC.tv (audio).
