Live: Liverpool 2 - 1 South China FC (SCFC Free Kick)
July 24, 2007
40 yards? 50 yards? The South China FC fans go nuts and the stadium erupts as Scott Carson has been beaten from almost all of 50 yards, a pure belter from the right side of the pitch. Not bad for a free kick!
Some goal… Carson’s gonna have that one come back to haunt him in the future.

Live: Liverpool 2 - 0 South China FC (Xabi Alonso Penalty)
July 24, 2007
Over midway through the first half and we’ve just had a sweet penalty from Xabi Alonso. Andriy Voronin was taken down in the box, debate on here as to whether it was a penalty or not but the referee judged Voronin to have been impeded by the arm across the chest and Xabi Alonso wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to add a goal to his pre-season account, tucking away past the keeper.
The penalty puts Liverpool out further in front at 2-0. Fans certainly haven’t died down at all and the going is realtively easy thus far in the game, Liverpool doing well to carve chances when they can. Kewell has been limited in both possession and use so far in the half, Sissoko almost - ALMOST - made it through for a goal but no joy of breaking his Liverpool duck just yet.

Live: Liverpool 1 - 0 South China FC
July 24, 2007
BAM!!
Riise just unleashed a pure bullet into the back of the net from a free kick outside the box. Damn. That makes Riise’s second goal of pre-season and he’s definitely showed all the signs of full fitness thus far in the pre-season. Ten minutes into the game and its 1-0 to Liverpool. In fairness, the keep stood no chance once the ball left his foot. No chance at all.

Portsmouth Up Next If Liverpool Win
July 24, 2007
In case you missed the lunchtime news, Portsmouth beat Fulham 1-0 earlier this morning in Hong Kong (an afternoon game there) which puts Portsmouth through to the Barclays Asia Trophy final on Friday. If Liverpool beat South China FC this afternoon it will be Liverpool against Portsmouth in the final.
Portsmouth’s goal came from Benjani. Kranjaer had his shot from 25 yards just before half time bounce off Zat Knight in the Fulham box with Benjani reacting first to fire past Warner from 12 yards.
Bring it on!

Gerrard Out, Liverpool Team News vs South China FC
July 24, 2007
No sign of Fernando Torres getting a Liverpool start as Rafa Benitez has again opted to go with Andriy Voronin and Peter Crouch up front. Steven Gerrard is sidelined through injury but is expected to be fit in time for Friday’s game. Jamie Carragher skippers the side and surprise surprise, Harry Kewell makes a start!
Here’s the full lineup for the evening fixture
Scott Carson, John Arne Riise, Alvaro Arbeloa, Jamie Carragher (Captain), Daniel Agger, Yossi Benayoun (Right wing), Harry Kewell (left wing), Momo Sissoko, Xabi Alonso, Andriy Voronin, Peter Crouch.
On the bench include Pepe Reina, Steve Finnan, Dirk Kuyt, Sami Hyypia, Jermaine Pennant. There’s around 40,000 in the stadium… madness.

Liverpool Vs South China FC Live
July 24, 2007
Hoping to bring you live blog updates from Liverpool vs South China FC in Hong Kong this afternoon as the Reds kick off their Asia Trophy (Barclays) around half one this afternoon our time.
Harry Kewell is included in the squad but won’t play given his recent tour of duty with Australia in Vietnam and we’ll have to wait until at least the Rotterdam tournament before we see Javier Mascherano in a red shirt for pre-season thanks to the Copa America.
I reckon we’ll see a combination of Torres and Crouch or Torres and Kuyt start up front, Torres well in line for a start after two appearances from the bench against Bremen and Auxerre. I’m also expecting Babel and Benayoun to start again on the wings with Jermaine Pennant also expected to feature.
No word on the team sheet just yet but as soon as I see it I’ll post it. Don’t forget that if you’ve an e-season ticket with LiverpoolFC.tv you can listen to the whole game.
Fancy A Bet?
Keeping an eye on the odds on this one and they’re well stacked in Liverpool’s favour obviously enough. You can grab Torres at 3/1 for first scorer in 90 minutes, Liverpool 6/1 to win 1-0, Torres to score first AND Liverpool win by the single goal gets you 18/1), Gerrard also 9/2 to score first for Liverpool. Check them out.

Red For Life, Finnan Bags A New Contract
July 23, 2007
Steve Finnan is the next in the line of Liverpool regular features to put pen to paper on a new deal as the Limerick lad has been awarded a new three year contract for the Reds.
That said, nothing has been inked yet with Finnan away in Hong Kong for the Asia Trophy but is expected to sign by the weekend.
Finnan joined Liverpool from Fulham following a period at the club where he’d been named as the player of the year in the right back position in the Premier League, also having not missed a game that season for Fulham. I’ve always thought he was a great buy, the purchase really allowing Jamie Carragher to develop in the centre and further strengthen the defense. He’s got no bother in going forward on the right flank and knows only too well how to hang a great pass into the box.
At 31 I reckon it is safe to say that Finnan will be a ‘Red for life’.

Torres, Benayoun, Babel, Voronin - Who Made The Impression?
July 20, 2007
The four big summer signings all spent time on the pitch today with Andriy Voronin, Ryan Babel and Yossi Benayoun all featuring in the first half while Fernando Torres played 45 minutes in the second half, but who made the impression?
Did anyone do enough on pre-season thus far to say, “yep, WELL glad we have him on our team for this year!”. So far 67% of you who have voted in the current poll say that Fernando Torres is your favourite summer signing so far (which, I’d quite possibly agree on). But we’ve had a man-of-the-match performance from Voronin against Bremen and Yossi Benayoun pulled it out of the bag against Auxerre today. A Fernando Torres start in Hong Kong for the Asian Cup from this weekend - will that be enough to get the Spaniard to bag his first goal?
I reckon so. He was a bit restricted today but looking sharp, took his chances when he had them even if they didn’t produce goals - its about taking the chances.
Anyway, if you’ve yet to cast your vote it only takes a second. Click here to tell LiverpoolAccess.com and everyone else reading who your favourite summer signing is so far or visit the homepage and cast your vote on the poll.

Gerrard, Agger Score As Liverpool Beat Auxerre
July 20, 2007
So its now four games out of four for Liverpool as Steven Gerrard (first half goal) and Daniel Agger (second half goal) scored against Auxerre to win 2-0 in Switzerland.
In fairness, if it had played out as a 0-0 draw I don’t think I would have minded, not finding the first half all that exciting at all. The only real glimpse of action was the setup play for Gerrard’s strike right on half time. Sure enough, Auxerre had a rare chance as well in the first half but it lacked pace and energy and was more like a training session in the park then a competitive friendly.
The second half was a little more up tempo - Torres, Riise, Crouch all getting in on the action and having a crack at goal. Yossi Benayoun made a good impact (I think) in the first half and into the second before being substituted by Nabil El Zhar, who went on to set up Daniel Agger from the corner. Just moments earlier El Zhar had almost increased the lead, Sorin just tipping over the bar from Zhar.
There were under 6,000 people in the stadium in the wind up and conditions in Switzerland were remarkably hot for the game given we’re sitting in pouring rain here in Ireland.
Benayoun really was a bright light in the first half and El Zhar did well in the second. We’ll have to wait until Hong Kong to see if Fernando Torres finds the net, he was a little restricted when the chances fell to him in the second half of action today. Hopefully too nothing arises out of the knock that Ryan Babel picked up in the first half but sure we’ll wait and see.
Final score from Switzerland before the Reds head off to Hong Kong, Liverpool 2, Auxerre 0.
