Live: Babel, Kuyt Up Front (Liverpool Team vs Portsmouth)
July 27, 2007
Here’s the teamsheet just ahead of kick off against Portsmouth…
Reina, Riise, Hyypia, Agger, Finnan, Kewell, Sissoko, Alonso, Pennant, Kuyt and Ryan Babel. The big news is that Fernando Torres’ international clearance hasn’t happened and he can’t play against Portsmouth this afternoon (8:30pm currently in Hong Kong).
Also noted is that Steven Gerrard starts on the bench along with Crouch, Carson, Threlfall, Carragher, David Martin, Arbeloa, Yossi Benayoun, Andriy Voronin and Lucas Leiva.

Leiva Wears Number 21
July 27, 2007
As shown in my post this morning, Lucas Leiva will be wearing #21 for the season, following in the footsteps of Gary McAllister and Dominic Matteo as well as the not so successful footsteps of Salif Diao (and Djimi Traore who vacated the jersey last season).
Hopefully it will bring him a bit of luck anyway!

Liverpool Favourite To Beat Portsmouth
July 27, 2007
Doing the betting check for lunchtime, PaddyPower.com are offering 4/7 on Liverpool to beat Portsmouth this afternoon with kick off just under a half hour away. If you’re a chancer and you think that Portmouth could come back to win it from a first half defeat then you could bag yourself as much as 66/1.
Liverpool are out at 10/1 to beat Pompey 10/1 while Torres, set to start, is down at 9/2 for the first goal of the game. A Torres hat trick would get you 22/1 but I fancy Voronin to score first at 6/1 if he starts.

Finally We Get To See Lucas Leiva
July 27, 2007
Finally! I was beginning to think that we’d never get to see Lucas Leiva in pre-season action but having hooked up with the club this week, the midfielder who is “not your typical Brazilian” is set to feature today against Portsmouth in the Asia Trophy final.
Steven Gerrard and Rafa Benitez have been speaking highly of the 20-year-old former Gremio midfielder who was announced at Liverpool yesterday.
Leiva is currently the captain of the Brazilian U20 national team although he missed the FIFA U20 Championships, which Brazil won, through injury. He was also part of the Gremio side that finished runner up in the 2007 Copa Libertadores. With “a bright future at the club” (according to Stevie G) and the fact that he “obviously has ability”, I can’t wait to see the chap in action.
Given our large presence of central midfielders (Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko and now Leiva) I’m hoping that he’ll see decent time on the pitch throughout the season, least of all starting with an appearance against Portsmouth at lunch time today.

Babel Over Benayoun But Everybody Loves Fernando
July 26, 2007
Looking at the current standings of the Liverpool Access poll, 53% of you who have voted (340 odd of all votes cast) say Feranando Torres, obviously enough, is your favourite Liverpool signing of the summer thus far.
With Torres so far out in front the poll topper is a real no-brainer. But the results between our three remaining big signings is a little closer. Andriy Voronin leads the way on 20%, Ryan Babel a little further back at 16% (103 votes) and Yossi Benayoun at 12% (79 votes).
If you want to have your say on the matter then click on to LiverpoolAccess.com and cast your vote on the homepage or alternatively click here to open the poll in a new window.

Liverpool Beat South China FC 3-1, Advance To Final
July 24, 2007
Liverpool will face Portsmouth in the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy after beating South China FC in Hong Kong Stadium this afternoon (our time) by 3-1. Portsmouth had earlier beaten Fulham by a single goal to take the first berth in the final and will face Liverpool this Friday afternoon.
As friendlies go, today’s match was damn good. When you look at crowd numbers, Liverpool played Auxerre last week in front of around 6,000 in Switzerland - today they took on South China in front of a 40,000 capacity crowd.
John Arne Riise opened the scoring first after ten minutes when he unleashed a rocket of a free kick towards the goal from the edge of the box before Xabi Alonso converted a penalty sixteen minutes later after Voronin was judged to have been pulled down. South China’s Li Hiaqiang made a show of Scott Carson from 40-45 yards out when the Chinese captain fired a free kick from the right in to the back of the net.
Liverpool’s third goal came through Daniel Agger who bags his second goal of the pre-season. Agger set Riise free on the left who swung the ball into the box for Kuyt to collect. Rather than have a go himself, Kuyt expertly teed up Agger who followed the action right from the back to blaze into the net and over the South China goal line.
Impressive performances from Andriy Voronin, Dirk Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant (both in the second half) while Xabi Alonso looked well in the first half. Scott Carson almost grabbed another full 90 minutes in goal only to be replaced by David Martin with just over five minutes left in the second half.
Overall, another good pre-season win for Liverpool - omens looking good for this coming season. Hopefully Stevie Gerrard and Fernando Torres will make an appearance on Friday - maybe too will Harry Kewell who surprised everyone (I think) by starting on the pitch this afternoon so soon after the Australian tour. Roll on Friday….

Live: Liverpool 2 - 1 South China FC (Second Half)
July 24, 2007
Ten minutes into the second half and Dirk Kuyt is on to partner Andriy Voronin up front with Peter Crouch making way for the Dutchman while Jermaine Pennant has come on for Harry Kewell, Pennant moving to the right with Benayoun heading over to the left.
Interesting to see how Kuyt and Voronin get on up front. Kuyt looked well last week, hopefully more of the same for the last half hour of the game or so.

Live: Liverpool 2 - 1 South China FC (Half Time)
July 24, 2007
Half time falls in Hong Kong and we’ve had a great first half. Liverpool opened the scoring with an absolute bullet of a free kick from outside the box on 10 minutes or so before Xabi Alonso doubled Liverpool’s advantage around the 27 minute mark, converting from the penalty spot after Voronin was downed in the box.
Not to be undone, South China FC stepped up through a Li Haiqiang free kick from around 40 yards out just five minutes after Liverpool’s goal. The left footed shot down a wicked swerve, skipped past Carson’s hand and into the back of the net. What can you do!
Good going so far, Liverpool on course for a place in the final against Portsmouth this Friday. Pity there’s no Torres today but he is expected to play on Friday. Roll on the second half.
