Finally We Get To See Lucas Leiva
Finally! I was beginning to think that we’d never get to see Lucas Leiva in pre-season action but having hooked up with the club this week, the midfielder who is “not your typical Brazilian” is set to feature today against Portsmouth in the Asia Trophy final.
Steven Gerrard and Rafa Benitez have been speaking highly of the 20-year-old former Gremio midfielder who was announced at Liverpool yesterday.
Leiva is currently the captain of the Brazilian U20 national team although he missed the FIFA U20 Championships, which Brazil won, through injury. He was also part of the Gremio side that finished runner up in the 2007 Copa Libertadores. With “a bright future at the club” (according to Stevie G) and the fact that he “obviously has ability”, I can’t wait to see the chap in action.
Given our large presence of central midfielders (Gerrard, Alonso, Sissoko and now Leiva) I’m hoping that he’ll see decent time on the pitch throughout the season, least of all starting with an appearance against Portsmouth at lunch time today.

Got something to say?

[…] As shown in my post this morning, Lucas Leiva will be wearing #21 for the season, following in the footsteps of Gary McAllister and Dominic Matteo as well as the not so successful footsteps of Salif Diao (and Djimi Traore who vacated the jersey last season). […]
If anyone has any good pics/material to contribute, we’ll post it on our Lucas Leiva fansite:
