Gerrard, Agger Score As Liverpool Beat Auxerre


So its now four games out of four for Liverpool as Steven Gerrard (first half goal) and Daniel Agger (second half goal) scored against Auxerre to win 2-0 in Switzerland.

In fairness, if it had played out as a 0-0 draw I don’t think I would have minded, not finding the first half all that exciting at all. The only real glimpse of action was the setup play for Gerrard’s strike right on half time. Sure enough, Auxerre had a rare chance as well in the first half but it lacked pace and energy and was more like a training session in the park then a competitive friendly.

The second half was a little more up tempo - Torres, Riise, Crouch all getting in on the action and having a crack at goal. Yossi Benayoun made a good impact (I think) in the first half and into the second before being substituted by Nabil El Zhar, who went on to set up Daniel Agger from the corner. Just moments earlier El Zhar had almost increased the lead, Sorin just tipping over the bar from Zhar.

There were under 6,000 people in the stadium in the wind up and conditions in Switzerland were remarkably hot for the game given we’re sitting in pouring rain here in Ireland.

Benayoun really was a bright light in the first half and El Zhar did well in the second. We’ll have to wait until Hong Kong to see if Fernando Torres finds the net, he was a little restricted when the chances fell to him in the second half of action today. Hopefully too nothing arises out of the knock that Ryan Babel picked up in the first half but sure we’ll wait and see.
