Ryan Babel “Excited”; A “Dream” For Yossi Benayoun

Liverpool’s latest two signings were unveiled to the press a few hours ago and Yossi Benayoun, who will wear the number 11 jersey next season, wasted no time in claiming that his move to Liverpool was “a dream” to move from West Ham to Liverpool. Ryan Babel showed his excitement too. The Dutch U21 winger will wear the number 19 jersey next season and was quoted earlier as saying it was “very exciting for me to sign for Liverpool and it gives me a great feeling”.

Babel replaces fellow Dutchman Bolo Zenden (about bloody time, no offence Bolo) on the left wing and can move around easy enough up front while Yossi Benayoun, 27, slots in on the opposite side of the pitch taking over the flanks once patrolled by Luis Garcia.

Its definitely going to be an interesting season. There’s no way at the end of the last campaign that I could have seen any of the three big summer signings (especially Torres) arrive at Liverpool but there’s no way either I imagined that Luis Garcia or Craig Bellamy would be plying their trade away from Anfield this coming season but there you go.

Babel has been compared to Thierry Henry in the past and although Rafa Benitez says its still early days to be drawing any kind of comparison, you’ll remember that Henry too started out on the wing with pace in his early 20s before shifting to a full striker role. Is the same path in store for this 20 year old? Quite possible.

Needless to say anyway Rafa has the two wingers he’s been after but there’s no word still on whether thats the end of the transfer happenings. Possible moves still to be made for Gabriel Heinze and Quaresma but who’s to know at this stage.

One of the main things this summer was to sign an effective striker who scores goals, I think pretty much everyone knew this but we have now signed 3 more and although Torres is a quality signing, he is still somewhat unproven. I find it hard to believe that he can keep all of these players happy, even with the unorthodox squad rotation. Even though Benitez is a fantastic manager, he should sign more with his head rather than the Chelsea view of more is better. I’d be interested of other people’s views just to see what you think!

It will be certainly difficult this season to keep the strikers happy. Voronin won’t be happy to sit around all season and neither will Dirk Kuyt. Peter Crouch was virtually assured his season was safe but there’s still some hefty rotation that will be done up front.

Torres may well get rotated in the league in his first season but I think he’s sure-fire starter when it comes to the European campaign, Voronin too when it comes to the domestic cup competitions.

Liverpool faltered last season when it came to the FA Cup and instead of fighting on four competitive fronts they were really just making their mark in Europe with another trip to the final.

While keeping the new blood happy they’ll certainly get plenty of opportunity for first team action if we’re to compete heavily in all competitions this season, something I hope we’re doing.

I don’t think however that its a case of “more is better”, especially given that we’ve signed wingers to replace wingers, signed strikers to replace strikers (Cisse, Fowler, Bellamy) and the transfer process (by report) seems to be quite thought out. Torres has been linked with Liverpool for almost three seasons now; Benitez has been tracking Babel since his Ajax debut and Benayoun’s name had been dropped around the Anfield hallways since the FA Cup against West Ham last year and beyond.

Torres certainly a quality signing and although unproven in the Premier League I’ve a feeling we’ll see something like the development of Cristiano Ronaldo in him, maybe a slow starter but he’s young, plenty of time, and plenty of goals behind him in an Atletico shirt as well.

Anyone else have any thoughts on the new signings?

Got something to say?
