Lee Peltier Heads For Yeovil

July 30, 2007

Lee Peltier Heads For YeovilLee Peltier won’t be featuring in any manner for Liverpool this season - he’s packed his backs and gone to Yeovil on town for the season. Not only that but he managed to squeeze in a game for them over the weekend before the loan deal was rubber stamped today.

Peltier got a handful of games at Anfield last season and is still “one for the future”, the loan move giving him the chance to get some much needed first team football in a different division. The 20 year old also spent the close season on loan at Hull before returning to Anfield for the summer.

Result - Liverpool Lose Asia Trophy To Portsmouth On Penalties

July 27, 2007

In a game that Liverpool should have won hands down in 90 minutes, Portsmouth walk away with the Barclay’s Asia Trophy after beating Liverpool 4-2 on penalties. It wasn’t going to be a day for Fernando Torres, having only received international clearance minutes before kick off, the Spaniard was denied a goal attempt in second half but fluffed his penalty, Liverpool’s third, which levelled out the playing field.

The chances were there but David James was in top form during the 90 minutes and denied Liverpool whenever he could, other chances just came to close shaves - Pennant, Alonso, Sissoko, Kuyt, Babel and Torres.

Lua Lua cracked one off the post for Portsmouth in the second half, Torres had his chances too, forcing James to tip over the bar, having another shot chipped wide, really piling on the pressure. No matter how much they piled on though it couldn’t be done.

So, the game turned to penalties, things looking in Liverpool’s favour from the get go when John Utaka missed Pompey’s first penalty. Gerrard and Kuyt converted Liverpool’s first and second but misses from Torres and Benayoun, both second half subs, proved costly and handed Portsmouth the silverware when Hreidarsson and Kranjaer both scored to leave Pompey 4-2 winners on the night.

End of a 100% record for Liverpool’s preseason but still good things to draw from today despite the lack of goals.

Live: Liverpool 0 - 0 Portsmouth (Asia Trophy, Second Half)

July 27, 2007

Deep into the second half with under 20 minutes remaining and STILL no score in the game. Liverpool going chance for chance as they can. Torres is on the pitch at the moment but still no sign of Gerrard coming on. Arbeloa has just come on for Riise with Carragher now warming up for the final quater of an hour.

Torres too has gone close, just now looking like he’d get the opening goal - no go.

Live: Liverpool 0 - 0 Portsmouth (Asia Trophy, Half Time)

July 27, 2007

Half time in Hong Kong and there’s no score yet between Liverpool and Portsmouth. By the way things are going though, Liverpool should be well in front and are bound to score in the second half. Surprised to see Ryan Babel start up front in the beginning alongside Kuyt but they’ve worked well for the most part of the first half, Kuyt going closest just after the half hour mark, his effort on the back of a Jermaine Pennant cross really should have been converted but what can you do!

Pepe Reina made his one move of the first half as well, called into action five minutes later with Gary O’Neill racing 1 on 1, Reina pull off a top class save to deny O’Neill the opportunity to make it 1-0.

Torres and Gerrard starting warming up just before the end of the half to rapturous applause, no doubt the two lads presence on the pitch in the second half will make a further world of difference. Delighted too that Torres picked up his international clearance giving him the chance to get some football in before heading back to the UK.

Here’s hoping for some goals in the second half!

Dirk Kuyt header 33 minutes, Pennant cross missed.

Pepe Reina saves (38 min), saving from Gary O’Neill 1 on 1

Live: Liverpool 0 - 0 Portsmouth (Asia Trophy, First Half)

July 27, 2007

We’re nearly a half hour into the first half and while there hasn’t been any goal action, its pretty much been Liverpool all the way. Kuyt and Babel are working well together, Babel just unlucky not to make it 1-0 a minute ago, taking the ball off David James’ foot at the edge of the box. Warm weather again, one or two water breaks but I reckon we’ll see a Liverpool goal yet, they’ve certainly been the stronger of the two sides thus far.

Dirk Kuyt took a bit of a knock early on in the half but apart from that no major injury worries or collisions.

Come on!

Live: Torres Clearance Arrives On Kickoff Against Portsmouth

July 27, 2007

Well well well… there’s a cracker update for Liverpool team news. We’re almost ten minutes into the game but word has been announced that the international clearance for Fernando Torres has arrived and arrived just before the game kicked off so he’s been moved onto the bench and should make a second half appearance.

Brilliant stuff :)
