Expect A Few Changes On LiverpoolAccess.com

May 10, 2007

With the season almost complete and Liverpool Access heading for its first birthday I’ve decided on a few changes around here that will allow me to get back to regular Liverpool blogging that I love so well and miss (the posts have been intermittent in the last two months or so).

I’ve got them down on paper and will be taking them to the screen, including a nice redesign of the blog itself. All will be rolled out once the season reaches its climax. Thanks to everyone so far who continues to read Liverpool Access, you’ll be delighted to see its going to return to its regular self shortly.

We’re Off To Asia

May 10, 2007

Liverpool are heading to Hong Kong for the Barclay’s Asia Trophy along with Portsmouth and Fulham as part of the pre-season preparations. Hopefully it will go a bit better than last season’s pre-season warm up. As soon as we finished with Crewe and Wrexham we collapsed on the foreign front with a run of losses.

Liverpool’s first game is against the winners of the Hong Kong FA Cup and takes place on July 24th.

€150k Bonus Each For Champions League Success

May 8, 2007

Word has it that the board have offered each member of the Liverpool squad a bonus of €150k or so if they make it six European Cup wins in Athens against AC Milan. The figure is 100K sterling or so a man and anyone who has played this season is eligible, making the pot out to be 2.5 million pounds.

Another incentive for Liverpool to win on the 23rd, roll on Athens :)

Liverpool Beat Chelsea, Advance To Champions League Final

May 1, 2007

Is this the end of Jose Mourinho at Chelsea? If it is, he can thank Daniel Agger for hammering a fine nail in his coffin, Agger, rattling home from outside the box in the first half of action tonight to set up a penalty shootout after extra time failed to separate Liverpool and Chelsea.

The result?

Liverpool beat Chelsea 4-1 on penalties, 5-1 on the night if you take Agger’s goal into the equation. We know Reina is good with spot kicks but Arjen Robben and Geremi will be scratching their heads tonight, wondering how they blew their penalty chances.

Still, if Chelsea had wanted the win, they should have gotten the job done in 90 minutes but couldn’t do it. Liverpool did come close to extending their lead in the second half when Dirk Kuyt rattled a header off the crossbar but that was about as close as it got in the second half. Xabi Alonso had a good chance in extra time, his long-range shot parried to Kuyt who fired into the back of the net only to be ruled offside.

With penalties on the cards, Robbie Fowler came off the bench with about 2 minutes of extra time remaining, joining Bellamy and Alonso who had come on from late in the second half. Fowler wouldn’t be needed though - Zenden, Xabi Alonso, Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt all scoring in succession, Frank Lampard the only one who could convert for Chelsea with Pepe Reina denying Robben and Geremi.

I don’t think the match could have gone better for Liverpool, the penalty shootout sure heightening the emotions from tonight and giving us something else to stick to Jose Mourinho. No doubt he’ll be moaning in the papers in the morning, but who gives a shit about him? Chelsea couldn’t put up, so they may as well shut up.

The result of course fires Liverpool into their second Champions League final in just three years where we’ve a great chance of going up against AC Milan in an unprecedented repeat of the 2005 final in Istanbul. Failing that, we’re facing Man United. What a game that could be….

Roll on the highlights, the many replays of the penalty shootout and here’s to the Final!

Live: Agger Do! Liverpool 1 - 1 Chelsea

May 1, 2007

Jesus!

The screams.

Well, that Liverpool goal was straight out of the training ground, no doubt about that. Gerrard tee’d up a 32m free kick square across the box for Agger to blast into the back of the net. What at sight at Anfield!!

Live: Liverpool vs Chelsea Champions League Semi Final

May 1, 2007

So…. here we are, under a half hour away from kick off. 90 minutes that will tell whether Liverpool go on to the Champions League final for the second time in three years or whether Chelsea move towards that ever-elusive spot in the final.

Doesn’t matter what way you look at it - Liverpool have it all to do. They’re going in down a goal, Chelsea can either grind out a draw (wouldn’t surprise me), or rush for an early kill off but whatever happens, Liverpool need to score once to tie the game, then keep scoring to win it. With Finnan back to tighten up the back line, hopefully we won’t see any trouble for Pepe Reina.

There’s no Ballack or Shevchenko for Chelsea though Drogba I’m sure will pop his head up as the proverbial pain in the arse of Liverpool. He came close on a few occasions last week but hopefully he’ll be contained tonight. Rafa Benitez is hoping too that the crowd will be there to drive Liverpool on to success tonight, but can the Liverpool fans make it ‘Fortress Anfield’?

Bloody hope so!

I’m surprised that Zenden is on the pitch again this evening, Benitez opting for experience at this level with Gonzalez sitting on the bench. The team itself reads like Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Riise, Javier Mascherano, Steven Gerrard, Bolo Zenden, Jemaine Pennant, Crouch and Dirk Kuyt. No spot on the bench for the sulking Jerzy Dudek who is replaced by Padelli and followed by Arbeloa, Sami Hyypia, Robbie Fowler, Mark Gonzalez, Xabi Alonso and Craig Bellamy.

We’ve got Anfield on our side, the fans and hopefully the speculation surrounding Mourinho, Ballack, Shevchenko (and their collective Chelsea futures) along with the fact that Chelsea effectively blew the league at the weekend can all add to Liverpool’s chances tonight.

Going for a Liverpool win as should any other Liverpool fan. Come on the Reds!
