Walk On - Liverpool Into The Quarter Final
Liverpool, despite the fact that play in the second half wasn’t fantastic, have survived the late threats of Barcelona and advance to the quarter final of the Champions league.
Delighted with the result but they were dire in the second half, and will need to make up for that in the next stage of the game. It came down, I feel to Liverpool looking like they had accepted they were going through to the next round. We beat them well in the first leg and if Barcelona were THAT committed, Barcelona should have done the job in the Nou Camp instead of waiting until tonight, knowing that they were starting on an uphill slope.
We made chances, Gerrard came close but not close enough and play overall was pretty restricted. Listening to Eamon Dunphy now on the TV and he’s got some seriously strong points about Liverpool that I hope the team are listening to.
End of the day, the team are through, not in the most glorious of circumstances for the second leg but at least they know they gave it their 110% and then some when it was needed the first time around. Barcelona for their part also lacked, and Gudjohnsen’s goal should have come earlier for them to give the Spaniards a fighting chance for the final 15 minutes but again, not to be.
End of the story from Anfield, Liverpool on to the next round alongside Chelsea who took the win against Porto tonight 2-1 (3-2agg), Roma (who struck twice in the first half to dispose of Lyon 2-0) and Valencia who go through on away goals over Inter Milan.
