Some disaster, Zambrotta just set Deco up at the back post for the sweetest of headers, fired low and right into the corner past Pepe Reina at the Nou Camp. On this Champions League Wednesday, Barcelona lead 1-0.

Maschereno Cleared To Play

Nice to see that Javier Maschereno has been given the nod, finally, to play for Liverpool. The Premier League today gave the nod for Maschereno’s appearance in a Liverpool jersey - possibly coming as early as tomorrow night against Barcelona.

From BBC News and a statment on the club’s site -

The Premier League is satisfied that the contractual arrangements proposed by Liverpool FC are consistent with its rules; particularly that the relationship between club and player is not subject to third-party influence

Happy days. Only took the guts of three weeks to get sorted but looking back at January now its been a long three weeks. The FA Cup weekend gave Liverpool a nice quiet break so hopefully Maschereno has been giving socks in training, sure enough he has. Fact is, he’s also out in Spain with the team at the moment and Benitez would have “no qualms” about playing him tomorrow night against Barca. Whether he does or not remains to be seen but at least the first major hurdle is over and he can start playing, the next is to hold onto him and help him live up to his South American potential.

So we won’t be going to the Irish Blog Awards under the Liverpool Access banner but The Kop Blog did make it through and I’ll be in attendance for my main online love, KilkennyMusic.com which is up for ‘Best Music’.

Been Away Again

Ahhh!!! Missed my report on the Everton match and we lost to poxy Newcastle at the weekend - bloody typical! Just when you can feel a good revival coming along you can trust Newcastle and Nolberto Solano to ruin it for everyone!

Gerrard and Carragher On European Team

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher are set to represent Europe at Old Trafford next month to commemorate United’s 50th anniversary of their first turn in European competition and of a united Europe.

Stevie and Jamie will be joined on a Europe XI squad by David Beckham who will likely make his last footballing appearance on English soil before jetting off the to the States for the summer.

With Marcello Lippi to head the European side and Alex Ferguson promising to field a full-strength side, it should make for quite an interesting game.

It all goes off on March 13th.

Rafa Benitez was today named Manager Of The Month for January - about time he got something for his work this season. Been a good week so far, new owners for the club, manager of the month award and a good string of wins in the league since the New Year. Congratulations Rafa!

Not long now to go to kick off so here’s the Liverpool team for the 205th Merseyside Derby.

Another Youth Capture For Liverpool

News this morning reports that Liverpool also captured 17-year-old Paraguayan defender Ronald Huth before the transfer window closed, signing the youth from Tacuary FC. Huth has an Italian passport and therefore doesn’t require a work permit to link up with Liverpool.

205th Merseyside Derby Today

The day of days is here again, this time its on Liverpool’s turf as the Reds and Blues of Merseyside clash today at lunch time.

Liverpool are flying it at present, and not to jinx anything, they’ve won 9/10 league games of late, we’ve beaten Chelsea in convincing form and I don’t think we could be any more fired up to take on Everton today. As it happens we’re just five points off Chelsea who in turn are just six points off United and there’s still three months of league football to play for. Hopefully, we’ll be able to add another three points to this season’s haul today.

My only gripe is that everyone thought the same earlier on in the season and Everton made bits of us at Goodison Park. Liverpool at this stage need to take a firm handle on the game. No wreckless challenges, think out the passes, play good-tempo football and work the ball all the way to the front. The midfield game has improved in recent weeks and we know now that the forwards are starting to roll in with their goals as well.

Liverpool don’t have any major injury worries either. Doubt we’ll see Momo Sissoko in action today but there’s a chance that both Bolo Zenden and new signing Alvaro Arbeloa may make the team sheet. Everton have Andy Johnson to worry about but if he does manage to make it to the pitch Liverpool will want to keep a close eye on both Johnson and Tim Cahill given the damage done at the last derby meeting.

The game kicks of at 12:45, I’m looking for a derby goal from Craig Bellamy and as for the scoreline…. is 3-1 to Liverpool too ambitious on a day like today? Payback’s a bitch
