Gerrard Concedes The Title
February 28, 2007
Liverpool’s title challenge has been ruled finished by Steven Gerrard today before we take on United at the weekend and then hosting Barcelona the week after.
Speaking earlier he said
If we can give a big performance and get the right result then it will give us all a big confidence booster for the Barcelona game. It’s just a pity there’s not as much riding on this game in terms of a Liverpool title challenge as we’d have hoped.
Its true that there isn’t much riding on the game in terms of a title challenge, but we’ve still got third place to anchor down and, we do have a slim possibility of replacing Chelsea as runners up in the league before the season is out.
A 2-1 lead over Barcelona going into the return leg also gives us hopes for a repeat of 2005 but I wouldn’t hold my breath. I reckon myself at this stage it is a foregone conclusion that United will lift the trophy but with just under three months of league football still left Liverpool should be going out and giving it their all to make up for the “silly points” lost at the start of the season.

Nice to see them again, Robbie’s two penalties and a goal a piece from Hyypia and Gerrard wrapped into five minutes of highlights.

Liverpool Beat Sheffield United 4-0 At Anfield
February 25, 2007
2-0 in the first half was pretty good going, two penalties from Robbie Fowler after two subsequent challenges on Steven Gerrard. Paddy Kenny guessed right for the first one but couldn’t reach it in time, while Fowler sent the Irishman the wrong way for the second one.
Liverpool were in control of the game from start to finish and while I was dubious about Jerzy Dudek being in goal for the game while Pepe Reina attended to his wife, he really had nothing to do as Sheffield United were rarely a threat, especially throughout the entirety of the first half.
LIverpool kept the foot down in the second half and were rewarded with two further goals, the first coming from Sami Hyypia on 71 minutes when the Finn found himself with room to shoot in the box, albeit his shot taking a deflection on the way to the back of the net but they all count at the end of the day. Steven Gerrard himself then finished United off with a cracker of a drive just minutes later.
Overall a top-drawer performance from Liverpool, even with seven changes made to the side after beating Barcelona on Wednesday night and no Craig Bellamy on the team at all it was a high spirited performance and a delight to see.
Also great to see Robbie bag another few goals, he hasn’t scored in the league since his penalty against Sheffield United and now he’s got another two. I’ve a strong feeling that this season will be Robbie’s last at Liverpool so its fitting that he gets a good run out before the season ends. With the arrival of Andriy Voronin pretty much confirmed for the summer, something’s got to give…

Live: Liverpool 2 - 0 Sheffield United (Penalty)
February 24, 2007
Another penalty opportunity for Liverpool and AGAIN Steven Gerrard hauled down in the box. Fowler with a chance to make it 2-0, left footed and sends Paddy Kenny the wrong way. Cool as a cucumber to curl inside the right post, its two goals for Robbie Fowler, two penalties for Liverpool and 2-0 on the scoreboard at Anfield.

Gerrard was held back at the post, Crouch had been dragged at trying to head the ball and Steve Bennett has given Liverpool a penalty, hauling Gerrard down smack in front of the referee. Crouch got a kick in the face as he came down, now sporting a cut on his head.
Fowler stepped up for the penalty, eventually, and just bagged his second goal of the season, smacking the ball into the left corner of the net. Paddy Kenny guessed the right way, but no joy for the Irishman.
Not much over 20 minutes gone in the game and the score is 1-0 to Liverpool.

Great conditions for the game, Liverpool playing left to right in the first half and we’re underway. Should be interesting to see how this one pans out.

Game Day: Liverpool vs Sheffield United (Team)
February 24, 2007
Just moments away from kick off at Anfield between Liverpool and Sheffield United and here’s the team.
Dudek, Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise, Pennant, Gerrard, Mascherano, Gonzalez, Crouch and Robbie Fowler. On the bench we’ve got Padelli, Agger, Alonso, Kuyt and Momo Sissoko.
Pity we won’t be seeing Reina in goal, I’m bloody skeptical every time Benitez puts Dudek between the posts, especially after his last two runs for Liverpool but nice to see Mascherano make his Liverpool debut!

Debut For Mascherano Today
February 24, 2007
Joy of joys, Javier Mascherano will be handed a full debut today and is due to be in the centre alongside Steven Gerrard come kickoff at 3pm. This means that Xabi Alonso will be starting on the bench.
We’re also going to be missing Pepe Reina who has been given time off to attend to his wife, due to give birth this afternoon. A new child in the world and a win against Sheffield United should make it a great day all round for Pepe! Full team news to follow shortly.

Hello two away goals! Ronaldinho looks pissed by pity about him. Fifteen minutes to go, Kuyt misses his first chance, Bellamy squares for Bellamy over to Riise to hammer into the roof of his net with his right foot. Savage stuff!

Back in the game
Finnan picked out Bellamy with a beautiful cross for the Welshman to head at goal, Victor Valdez dropping and taking the ball behind the line with him. Kuyt made sure of the finish but the ball had already crossed the line so we’re back on level pegging. Can Liverpool build on the momentum? Bloody hope so! Just a few minutes to go to half time.
