No Takeover Tuesday Today

January 16, 2007

Despite news reports to the contrary yesterday, the takeover of Liverpool won’t be going down today and according to TeamTalk it will be at least the end of the month if not into February before the deal is complete.

What this means of course is that there may well be no transfer money available to Liverpool for new signings outside of what the club is able to raise itself. Lord knows there’s one or two strays we could do with offloading but with two weeks left in the month and no sign any actual transfers on the table - barring the possible loan of Javier Mascherano - it will likely remain a quiet month for Liverpool.

Of course, there’s always Chelsea up next with a view to something happening in the aftermath. Failure again to hold our own against the current Premier League champions in the league campaign isn’t really an option and we know there’s certain players in the squad who will have a point to prove if they’re not to be next in line out the door.

Whatever the case - there’s no takeover today and I doubt at this stage there’ll be any new additions to the squad before the summer. Thoughts?

Result: Watford 0 - 3 Liverpool

January 14, 2007

Three good goals, three away goals and things seem back on track. All in all I think the result was needed, something a bit bigger than 1-0 or 2-1 to get the spirits back on high ground as Liverpool beat Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road. Surprise surprise, Pepe Reina is back in goal and we don’t concede anything.

The near capacity crowd saw Craig Bellamy strike with a great tap in after 34 minutes before Peter Crouch added two of his own to keep Liverpool in third place, 1 point ahead of Arsenal. Bellamy’s tap in was impressive, Finnan sending in a lovely low cross along the box from the right to meet Bellamy at the back post who turned sharp to fire home from close range.

Bellamy will be disappointed not to have scored a second, Ben Foster unable to get a hold on Bellamy’s 40th minute strike which teed up Peter Crouch to head home before Crouch added his second and Liverpool’s third just minutes into the second half, the lanky forward rattling home from 12 yards - Bellamy again having a hand in the setup of the goal.

The result gives Liverpool a boost ahead of the next league game - Chelsea. Last thing we need is to recover well after the disaster against Arsenal only to fall at the hurdle next weekend and drop valuable points. But thats for another post altogether. For now, I’m just happy to see the side back to winning ways.

New Argentinian Blood At Anfield

January 12, 2007

While one Argentinian at Anfield has yet to seriously prove himself as a regular contender for a starting position, another has arrived in the form of Emiliano Insua who signed yesterday on an 18-month loan deal from Boca Juniors. The young left-back just turned 18 last weekend and had agreed a deal with Liverpool in late November to move to Anfield during the January transfer window.

While he hadn’t yet made a first-team breakthrough for Boca he has been playing for the Argentinian U20s and made the 20-man squad for the 2007 South American Youth Championships in Paraguay. (via wikipedia)

Interesting to see what involvement - if any this season - Insua will have with the first team.

A Home For Traore

January 11, 2007

Ex-Red Djimi Traore is on the move again having signed a deal until the end of the 2009 season in a move worth £1m to Charlton. Traoré managed a whole 13 games between injury, suspensions and three different managers at the Valley. Ben Thatcher is being lined up by Charlton to replace the Frenchman but hopefully he’ll finally be able to find at Portsmouth.

Kiss Goodbye To Garcia For Season

January 10, 2007

No more coming off the bench to score spectacular goals or ripping it up in Europe - Luis Garcia has been sidelined until the summer after he ruptured his ACL (right knee) last night. Garcia replaced Mark Gonzalez in the first half but was stretchered off with about 20 minutes to go last night in obvious pain.

Results from scans taken earlier show that her ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will play no further part this season. Bad news also for Mark Gonzalez and his stop-start season as he’s looking at spending a good three weeks out of action following his injury in the first half last night as well.

I guess Momo Sissoko won’t have to fight too hard for a place back in the team while he returns to full fitness.

New Keeper On Loan?

January 10, 2007

Word this lunchtime suggests that Liverpool are about to take Sampdoria’s Danielle Padelli on loan until the end of the season. I would have thought this a good move if we were still in the FA Cup and League Cup and needed further cover for Pepe Reina but given two erratic performances by Jerzy Dudek in the last week and Scott Carson’s stay in The Valley you can understand why a goalkeeper is on the shopping list for January.

The Italian U21 international is due to undergo a medical today, or so says the BBC, with no mention yet on the official club homepage.

Result: Liverpool 3 - 6 Arsenal

January 10, 2007

I thought losing to Chelsea at Anfield when they scored 4 goals was bad. Getting beaten by Arsenal twice in a week, the second time conceding six goals was just a nightmare. On home soil.

I’m a bit lost as to making a decent match report aside from the actual bewilderment at the game as a whole. Why, when you’re knocked out of the FA Cup (certainly carrying more prestige than the League Cup) would you insist not on improving your team for the next game but effectively reducing the quality of the first team on the night and what may well be your only chance at some glory on the domestic front. Why, would you leave Dudek back in goal - two starts from the Polish keeper and he concedes 9 goals. Why, finally, would you not bloody well stick a leash on Julio Baptista? Bad enough that Rosicky netted twice at the weekend but to let Baptista net 4 times? Give me strength!

I wouldn’t mind only the game actually looked some way decent for the first half hour. Arsenal went a goal up through Jeremie Aliadiere on 26 minutes before Robbie Fowler exacted an equaliser just four minutes later, picking up a nifty cross from Luis Garcia.

The rest is a complete blur.

Sure enough Gerrard scored with a nice volley into the net at the Kop end in the second half, Sami Hyypia headed home with ten minutes remaining but in and around those goals we were slaughtered.

Almost every good chance Arsenal had on goal actually ended up in the back of the net. Liverpool too could have had a fourth with Gerrard hitting the crossbar but this is one of those games that the team will want to put behind them VERY quickly.

Stephen Warnock also picked up a knock in the second half but has been given the all-clear this morning while Luis Garcia and Mark Gonzalez are due for checks today. Gonzalez was taken out in the first half with a shin injury and replaced by Garcia who himself was removed with a knee injury with 20 minutes let to play.

Three big losses to Arsenal so far this season so its Champions League or bust now for Liverpool.

Live: Liverpool 1 - 1 Arsenal

January 9, 2007

And we’re back in the game through Robbie Fowler, scoring on his left foot following Fabio Aurelio’s free kick. The Brazilian found Luis Garcia who crossed in for Fowler from the edge of the box, Robbie taking the ball on his left to fire home from close range. Game on!

Live: Liverpool 0 - 1 Arsenal

January 9, 2007

So it begins… Jeremie Aliadiere had the better of the Liverpool defence, Kolo Toure gifting him the ball from inside the Arsenal half for Aliadiere to fire low and to the right past Dudek from six yards. First blood to Arsenal.
