Are Liverpool Now In The Hands Of The Americans?
January 31, 2007
Just when it seemed like Dubai International Capital were going to wrap up the takeover of Liverpool, they’ve only gone and pulled the plug on the entire deal. There was an announcement on the Liverpool website this evening that just read
he process of seeking new owners for the club is still underway and a decision on the future will be taken in the next few days.
Bit of a kick in the arse for Liverpool in fairness. I thought the deal was going to be done and dusted. With the club looking for new owners I’m hoping that its not a case of panic shopping, shopping ourselves to potential investors that is. So, with the Dubai group out of action are we now in the hands of the Americans? Namely the Mr Gillett himself. Will interest reappear from the Kraft family as was reported over the summer?
Reason being is that according to Sky Sports, David Moores and the rest of the board met up in London to refuse DIC’s bid for the club and to discuss “an improved offer” from George Gillett.
The offer had been accepted in principle by majority shareholder David Moores. It appears that the Liverpool board and the majority shareholder David Moores were unable to approve these terms in order to allow DIC to make a formal offer to all shareholders.
By the reading of various reports and the wording of DIC’s reaction, I get the impression that THEY got the impression that they were being ripped off and the offer being overpriced but I don’t think we’ll ever know a lot about the details of the offer. What I do like though is that even with DIC in due dilligence, George Gillett stood by and made a stronger offer and maintained his huge interest in investing in the club and if I’m to be honest I think I’d rather see him as the backer than the Dubai group. On one side money is money but I like what he’s done with his investment in American sports and I think his side of things would be good for the club overall.
Guess we’ll just have to wait a few days and see what develops around Anfield.

Result: West Ham 1 - 2 Liverpool
January 30, 2007
A 25 yard belter from Dirk Kuyt and a quick second from Peter Crouch, both goals in the early stages of the second half, proved the difference tonight against West Ham as Liverpool won 2-1.
In fairness, Liverpool - and West Ham - were pretty slack in the first half and really should have done better. Whatever Rafa Benitez said to them at the break must have rang home as within 12 second of the restart, Liverpool were 1-0 to the good, Alonso teeing up Dirk Kuyt for an absolute scorcher into the top corner.
Eight minutes later Liverpool were cruising at 2-0 with Peter Crouch popping up to bag his 13th goal of the season - the same number he reached last season and we’ve still got plenty of league football left before May. Kepa Blanco, on loan from Sevilla, rescued a goal for West Ham and set up a slightly nervous final 15 minutes on the field but Liverpool proved strong and held on for the win.
Three points is all that matters in my book tonight and three points is what Liverpool will leave London with. Sets the Merseyside derby up for the weekend, should be an absolute cracker!
Final score from Upton Park, Liverpool 2 - 1 West Ham.

He’s only been on the field a minute, but a wonder substitution by West Ham have Liverpool questioning their defence and The Hammers back in the game - Kepa Blanco linking up with Bobby Zamora to fire home on 77 minutes or so.

The team have totally woken up from the first half. Crouch just grabbed his 13th goal of the season having had a hand in setting up Kuyt for the first one. Terrific finish by Crouch, don’t think West Ham could have done anything anout that one. Just under ten minutes gone in the second half and its Liverpool two goals to the good.

Jesus. There’s some introduction to the second half! Only 12 seconds on the clock and Kuyt has smacked a beauty first time past the helpless Roy Carroll for his 10th goal of the season. Tip of the hat to the Dutchman.

Bit of a drab first half by all accounts, nothing massive in the way of chances. Fowler and Pennant have been busy warming up on the sidelines so hopefully they’ll see introductions at some stage in the second half but Liverpool need to come out after the break and inject some serious life into their performance in my opinion.
Half time at Upton Park and the game stands 0-0.

Been A Busy Week!
January 28, 2007
A busy week has kept me away but here’s what I’m making of it…
- Steve Warnock off to Blackburn
Fair play to the lad, deserves first team football at this stage in his career and I don’t think he was ever going to see much further development at Liverpool given the presences of Riise, Aurelio and Mark Gonzalez on the left. - The Takeover
Wish they would really wrap things up. Interesting to see though that Gillet is back in the race - at least supposedly back in the race - but whether or not he makes an approach is another thing. If an offer is tabled I’m assuming we won’t see any takeover move for a month or two in comparison to the few short weeks it should take for DIC to finish their business and assume control of the club. - Peter Crouch to Spurs?
Get out and walk! He’s been linked with anyone and everyone who is looking to try and regain their season - well, so are we! He’s proving his worth too. If he did leave he’ll have proved a sound investment, I’d expect Liverpool double their money on him anyway but I’d like to see him stick it out at Anfield thanks very much. Quite fond of the lanky chap. - Jermaine Pennant
About bloody time he perked up and upped his performance a gear or two. Great day against Chelsea last weekend only now he’s set the bar for himself and it better not prove a one-goal wonder. His assists have been vital in recent weeks so hopefully he builds on it. - Xabi Alonso
Put that pen to paper fairly lively sunshine! - Transfers In And Out
Salif Diao - good riddance. No offence to the chap but its about time he was shifted out of Anfield. Its a wonder it wasn’t done long before this, or why he was even brought into the club in the first place. As for Darren Potter, it is a pity but what can you do. Some people just aren’t going to get their chance to go any further and he’s one of them, hopefully he’ll be much better off at Wolves. As for the new Dutch arrival - happy days. The Irish know that young dutch attackers give you a reason to fear, so I’m hoping for good things out of this one.
And of course - we bet Chelsea! Mind you, Chelsea are doing a good job at beating themselves up internally so hopefully there’ll be another few points to gain for us in the race to the end of the season, starting with West Ham on Tuesday night.

Game Day: Liverpool vs Chelsea
January 20, 2007
Its on home soil, its Liverpool vs Chelsea and I won’t get anywhere near the game as I’ll be attending Bar Camp in Waterford so its a quick note this morning.
This game means so much to both sides. Rivalry in the last two seasons has been massive, not forgetting the previous season again where Chelsea pipped Liverpool to fourth place on the last day of the season - that one still pisses me off. Chelsea are in a rut though. Their standards are slipping, they’ve got problems with snitches, they’ve got problems with strikers, a dodgy defence, a goal keeper in a helmet, problems with management and more. Of course, it could be one of the greatest mind games we’ve ever seen!
Liverpool, up and down season, need the win. Simple as that. Whether Chelsea will bend over and give us the win is doubtful but I reckon we’re in with a good shot. Home soil advantage, not half the amount of problems that Chelsea have, so far so good.
Stick Reina in goal, keep it simple and play it straight. Clean sheet. There’s a nice bit of creativity going on in the front lines and Crouch could be the answer to a goal against Chelsea’s funky backline. Couple in Kuyt or Bellamy - or even better, sneak in Robbie Fowler. At this stage Chelsea won’t know what to do with him, on he comes, scores the winner and we can all watch the highlights in peace.
Either way, I’m annoyed I’m not getting to the game but hopefully the highlights will prove interesting. Going for the Liverpool win or at least a draw - the draw of course being better for us than Chelsea but we’ve got to get the points to keep ahead of the Gunners.
Kick off is 12:45 in the usual places.
