Result: Birmingham 0 - 1 Liverpool
Liverpool are through to the quarter finals of the League Cup, something Man United couldn’t manage this season, after a 1-0 win away from home to Birmingham, Liverpool’s goal coming courtesy of Danny Agger.
While Liverpool walk away with the victory, Craig Bellamy should be kicking himself before he goes to bed tonight for wasting several great chances.
Bolo Zenden and Jermaine Pennant were the only two on the starting eleven that carried over from the win against Reading last weekend as Rafa rang in the changes for the League Cup game, and rightly so. Momo Sissoko started but was stretchered off, possibly with a dislocated shoulder after taking a heavy fall but we should know more about this by morning.
The game’s only goal came through Danny Agger, set up by a Jermaine Pennant corner, Agger making the best of a defensive lapse in clearing the ball to almost burst the net, smashing the ball home and high into the goal from inside the 6 yard box giving Agger his second goal of the season following his wonderstrike against West Ham.
Robbie Fowler, captain for the night, should be snapping too when it looked like he would be taking Liverpool’s penalty midway through the second half, Bellamy instead getting to take the kick and then scuffing the attempt, Maik Taylor saving with ease.
Final score from St Andrews, 1-0 to Liverpool.
