Live: Bordeaux 0 - 0 Liverpool

October 18, 2006

Try as they might, Liverpool can’t find the back of the net with 37 minutes or so gone in the first half. Crouch had the best chance of the game just moments ago, shooting just inches wide after making room for himself in the box. Sami Hyypia had come close just minutes previous getting under a Steve Finnan cross but failing to capitalise on his effort.

United Return For Agger?

October 18, 2006

According to Sky Sports it looks like Daniel Agger is inline to make a return to footballing action in the big game against United at the weekend. Agger is in a plaster from the wrist up after breaking his hand playing for Denmark in last week’s international games. While in a cast up to his elbow he is still hoping to be fit to play, and given permission to play with the cast, when Liverpool travel to Old Trafford for the lunch time game on Sunday.

Big Suspension Looms For Dudek After Everton Scrap

October 18, 2006

Looks like Jerzy Dudek is in a little bit hotter water than he thought at first. Dudek has been facing the possibility of a three match ban after being redcarded following the brawl in the Liverpool vs Everton reserves game last week, Dudek sent off for violent misconduct following a challenge on the Polish goalkeeper by Everton young lad Victor Anichebe.

Today however it was revealed that the FA are considering a further charge, bringing “improper conduct” into the fold which would add an additional 2 games onto Dudek’s pending suspension. The charge follows his failure to leave the pitch after the initial incident as well as confronting the referee.

The suspension will likely give Benitez a big headache in terms of goalkeepers as he will be without strong cover for Pepe Reina given that Scott Carson is away at Charlton for the season. Jerzy starts on the bench tonight in France against Bordeaux.

Gerrard Out Of Bordeaux Clash

October 17, 2006

Steven Gerrard will miss tomorrow night’s clash with Bordeaux and has not travelled with to France and instead will feature against Man United next weekend where Stevie will mark his 350th appearance for Liverpool.

Gerrard picked up a hamstring injury in the draw against Blackburn at the weekend and as of yet hasn’t been able to shake it off but is expected to start at Old Trafford at the weekend.

Benitez is taking full precautions ahead of the clash with United as we really need to start picking up the points. Danny Agger (hand) and Robbie Fowler won’t feature in France either and while Momo Sissoko and Dirk Kuyt have travelled, according to LiverpoolFC.tv this morning it is unlikely that both will feature with Benitez giving Sissoko an “eighty percent chance of playing” with “Kuyt just twenty percent”.

Result: Liverpool 1 - 1 Blackburn

October 15, 2006

Craig Bellamy finally broke his duck in the Premier League but Liverpool couldn’t find the goals to secure the win at Anfield yesterday, the game winding up 1-1 in the end.

Liverpool had the best of the early chances, Crouch coming close on two occasions before Benni McCarthy turned the game in Blackburn’s favour picking up David Bentleys low cross in the box to fire home at the back post with ease. Blackburn also struck twice more past Pepe Reina only for the goals to be ruled offside.

The second half was a different story, Luis Garcia was introduced early on and Liverpool started to find a good bit of energy, building up eventually to Fabio AurĂ©lio’s corner - the Brazilian flighting the ball to the back post for Craig Bellamy to meet and head into the back of the Rovers net on 63 minutes.

Liverpool have got to start striking first, too many games going by now where we find ourselves have to claw our way back into the game rather than taking the bull by the horns. At least there’s another point gone on to the boards and, but for better finishing, it really should have been all three points but we’ll wait and see what happens against United and, first, against Bordeaux.

Live: Liverpool 0 - 1 Blackburn (HT)

October 14, 2006

It is half time at Anfield and Liverpool really need to sort it out for the second half. Crouch has been ok but needs to get that drive and power in his finishing; Pennant has had a decent game and looks a bright spark but with Luis Garcia warming up feverishly in the first half I wouldn’t be surprised to see him introduced early on in the second.

Alonso and Gerrad had a good stab at midfield in the early part of the half but Liverpool find themselves behind by a Benni McCarthy goal - one of three that Blackburn scored, two of which were ruled out for offisde.

Liverpool are effectively on the back foot and could do with shaping up for the second half if they’re going to muster anything out of this game.

A good low ball in across the box to the far post from David Bentley left Benni McCarthy with little cover and little difficulty in firing home. Having had two fantastic chances in the first fifteen minutes from Peter Crouch, one of them cleared off the line, we find ourselves down by a goal - again - at home - again.

Just under a half hour left to play in the half.

Live: Crouch, Bellamy Start Up Front

October 14, 2006

Rafa Benitez, although earlier suggesting that Robbie Fowler might play, has left Fowler out of the selection again, opting for Crouch and Bellamy to start up front with no place for Robbie on the bench.

The team for today’s game, kicking off at 3pm is as follows:Reina, Finnan, Riise, Hyypia, Carragher, Alonso, Gerrard, Pennant, Fabio Aurelio, Crouch and Bellamy.

With both Riise and Aurelio on the pitch it is likely that we’ll see Mark Gonzalez take the floor at some stage as he shares the bench with Jerzy Dudek, Gabriel Paletta, Luis Garcia and Bolo Zenden.
