Reds Now 100/1 For Title

Reading Dominic Fifield’s article on the Guardian this morning its interesting to see that Liverpool - yes, us might Reds - are now 100/1 to win the league title (though checking with Paddy Power after reading they’re offering odds of 50/1 to win the title, still putting Liverpool in fourth place at the finish). Thats a series cry from where we were at the start of the season. Yet languishing in the bottom half of the table (ok, just inside the bottom half but we’re there nonetheless) and a princely sum of 11 points off the lead while level on games with everyone else, is it a wonder we’re being priced out at 100/1?

If that doesn’t convince you, note that we’re still failing to score away from home. Do the club realise that HALF our league games are played away from home? We’re solid enough at home, we’ve scored eight and conceded two. But we’re lousy away - scoring one and conceding nine.

So maybe its right that Benitez questions the commitment of the Liverpool squad. The changes were rang in force this summer and the start of preseasons (around the time LiverpoolAccess.com launched) looked promising. Two decent friendly wins on English soil (Wrexham and Crewe) before taking off to Europe for a few games. That much, of course, ended in disaster but we made amends for it by beating Chelsea in the Community Shield.

But the performances have been sporadic - nothing what you would expect from a team who should be challenging for the league title at this stage. 17 years is a long wait but we’ll keep on waiting as its what we’re used to. But the players themselves shouldn’t decide to keep on waiting. Go out there and play every game like its your last game, because, as the January transfer window approaches you might just find that it could be your last game.

The lads need something of a confidence boost, something that should have happened at Old Trafford on Sunday. Sure, Benitez rues that fact that Bellamy was ruled out in the final training session prior to the game, but Kuyt and Crouch were there. So were nine other guys on the pitch at the start but they couldn’t muster the finishing to secure a win - finishing which is something we’ve been lacking so far this season.

We know that we can win the league cup. We know that we can win the FA cup (and did so last year). We know that we can win the Champions League (viva Istanbul). But why is there such a difference in the league?

Give the article a read, its worth it with a cup of tea this morning. As for me, I’m off to find somewhere offering 100/1 on the league, stick a tenner on it, then laugh all the way back to the bank at the end of the season.
