A Curse On International Duty

I’m totally behind Benitez now on his stance for compensation for players injured during international duty. Not only is Dirk Kuyt missing for a few weeks but now Danny Agger faces over a month out of action after breaking his hand playing for Denmark last night.

Agger was already named the PFA Fans Player of Month for September and has been on fantastic form since the beginning of the season, bloody shame that he’s out of action and will miss the game against United.

Compensating for injuries is all well and good for the English FA, but how are Iceland expected to pay for an injury to Gudjonsen? Or how could the Irish FA possibly pay any reasonable compensation if Steve Finnan was put out for a few months?
A compensation system just can’t work for the smaller associations.

Thats quite true too, smaller associations, in particular the FAI, would find it extremely difficult to compensate clubs. What would you think of an insurance policy as opposed to an association paying the player’s wages directly?

[…] According to Sky Sports it looks like Daniel Agger is inline to make a return to footballing action in the big game against United at the weekend. Agger is in a plaster from the wrist up after breaking his hand playing for Denmark in last week’s international games. While in a cast up to his elbow he is still hoping to be fit to play, and given permission to play with the cast, when Liverpool travel to Old Trafford for the lunch time game on Sunday.
