Result: Liverpool 3 - 0 Tottenham

Ah…. brilliant.
Thats how I’ll open this one up. Brilliant.
Absolutely delighted at the result, figured there would be a goal coming in the second half after the performance we had in the first, but never expected to see three of them - and certainly never expected the screamer from John Arne Riise, Andy Gray struggling for words or adding up the yardage on that one.
Solid performance in the first half with a few chances, and a few hair moments. Everyone on the pitch looked on form, Gonzalez in particular, though he was a little starved in the latter stages of the first half. Thank God he was there in the second half though. Still waiting for that Bellamy goal in the league, which almost came on the 63rd minute only to hit the post from 3 yards out before Gonzalez buried the rebound from a tight angle. Lucky it was scored when it was as only 60 seconds previous we should have been a goal down but for poor finishing.
Once the goal went in though, the team didn’t slow down and went on in search of the second, eventually coming through Dirk Kuty who latched on to Garcia’s threaded pass, gave the ball a deft flick to tee himself up for a rocket through the back of the net. Bad timing on the part of the Spurs defence though and bad awareness from Paul Robinson who was too busy thinking that Kuyt was offside than to protect his goal, allowing the Dutchman to rifle past him with ease.
Then, just as you think its safe to start into a 2-0 match report, up pops John Arne Riise from around 35 yards out, takes the ball on the outside of his left boot and unleashes a screamer past Paul Robinson, low and to the right.
Fantastic stuff by Liverpool, two league wins on the trot and good momentum going into the midweek clash with Galatasaray.

Welcome back John Arne Riise.
Just when it looks safe to start typing a match report on a 2-0 win at Anfield, up pops John Arne Riise to deliver an absolute belter of a goal from all of 30 yards. What a way to mark a return to action, so soon too after the injury picked up against Everton. Absolutely fantastic performance by Liverpool today. 3 minutes of extra time to play.

Fantastic stuff from Liverpool as Dirk Kuyt picked up Garcia’s threaded ball on his right foot to provide a deadly finish and lash the ball past Paul Robinson. Really heating up for Liverpool now with just over 15 minutes left in normal time. Garcia came on in place of Craig Bellamy, with Kuyt on form now I wonder if we’ll even see Peter Crouch.

Mark Gonzalez has scored his second goal for Liverpool on just his first Premier League start. Gerrard did all the ground work, firing across the six yard box for Bellamy who hit the post from about 3 yards right. Who else but Gonzalez to finish off the rebound, he’s been nothing short of fantastic in the second half so far.

Live: Liverpool 0 - 0 Spurs (Halftime)
September 23, 2006
Half time at Anfield and its not looking too bad for Liverpool but the supply certainly needs to get better. Mark Gonzalez has been great in the first half, along with Momo Sissoko, while Bellamy and Xabi Alonso have both come close to the mark.
Dirk Kuyt managed to hit the bar in a bit of a scramble but Momo Sissoko couldn’t direct the rebound into the goal (about 35 minutes or so). Two minutes later it really should have been a penalty for Liverpool with Ledley King clearly handling in the box. Bellamy came close again almost on the stroke of half time but for Robinson to parry his shot.
Xabi Alonso to score from his own half today? Word has it that you’d get odds of 200/1… hopefully it won’t take another 65 yard effort for Liverpool to find the back on the net today as there’s certainly a goal on the cards for the second half.

Football’s Dirty Secrets : Liverpool To Take Legal Action
September 21, 2006
The Premier League, the FA and now FIFA are in a bit of stir this week after BBC’s Panorama screening of Football’s Dirty Secrets, looking at allegations of bribes within the English game.
Liverpool’s involvement is based around the future of Middlesbrough youth player Nathan Porritt who was touted to a certain Liverpool official, as well as other clubs of late, by agent Peter Harrisson. Benitez, who seems straight as an arrow, thankfully says there’s no place in football for corruption. And bloody right at that! Its bad enough to see it happening in other leagues and happening in the Premier League, but when your own club is suggested and linked to the allegations then its a different story.
As such, the club have sought legal advice with the slight possibility of charges coming to any club named in the show by the FA or FIFA.

Result: Liverpool 2 - 0 Newcastle

Welcome to Anfield Dirk Kuyt. First league goal for Liverpool tonight for the Dutchman as he helped the side to a 2-0 win over Newcastle. Pity Xabi Alonso had to take the wind out of his sails a little bit, but boy did he do it in style - and nothing says style like a 65 yard strike, high over the falling body of Steve Harper and into the back of the Newcastle net.
Kuyt opened the scoring for Liverpool on the 29th minute, breaking through the defence to fire home comfortably past Steve Harper, showing the type of finishing that Liverpool have been missing in their strike force of late.
Alonso however, went on to steal the show scoring his first goal since January - almost an exact copy of the goal he scored against Luton in the FA Cup, also the last time that he scored.
Peter Crouch and Mark Gonzalez both made late appearances in the game (82,86) but the win was certainly most deserving and thankfully drives the club a little bit further up the table. Roll on Spurs at the weekend.
