Result: Liverpool 3 - 2 Galatasaray

September 27, 2006

Liverpool finally managed to score in a European game, and finally managed a win as well but gave up two goals midway through the second half to making the finish a little nervey. All the same, the club now sit at the top of the group with 4 points from 2 games, albeit for having scored more goals as PSV could only manage the one goal against Bordeux in a dull affair in the group’s other game.

Liverpool couldn’t have asked for a brighter start being two goals up within the opening fifteen minutes of the game, really setting the tone for the evening. Peter Crouch fired the his first and Liverpool’s first of the game past Mondragon in the Galatasaray goal after just nine minutes. Fabio AurĂ©lion made some excellent space down the left flank, crossing from deep with an absolute pin-perfect cross for Crouch to jump and get his foot onto, hammering past Mondragon from close range.

Goal number two game just five minutes later, again supplied through the air, this time for Luis Garcia to grab his first goal of the season with a bullet header with Mondragon taken out of play with some nice football at the near post.

Liverpool were crusing at this stage and continued to test the Turkish defence, with Kuyt, Gerrard and Fabio Aurélio all going close.

The second half continued as brightly as the first, Peter Crouch popping up shortly after the break with a spectacular goal, Finnan crossing in from the right of the box for Crouch to hit a sweet overhead kick past the keeper who could do nothing but stare in amazement as the giant English man hammered the ball past him again.

Cruising at 3-0 wouldn’t last too long however as either side of the hour mark Liverpool conceded to two fine Umit Karan headers, Karan coming off the bench for the second half to aide the Turkish attack and although we had more chances after a few changes the scoreline would remain 3-2.

Fantastic start, bit of a rattle to the cage for the finish but its three points in the bag and two fine goals from Peter Crouch to leave us top of the group.

The fifth goal of the game goes in and Liverpool’s 3-0 advantage from the start of the second half now stands at 3-2 with Liverpool under pressure. Dirk Kuyt is gone off, Liverpool back to 4-5-1 as Karan gets his second goal and second header after coming off the bench at half time. Still 25 minutes to play.

Just as Liverpool go 3-0 to the good, Umit Karan gets his head under the ball to nod past Pepe Reina. So long as another goal doesn’t go in we’ll be alright but would have been nice to keep the cleaning sheet, cruising along at 3-0.

Live: Liverpool 3 - 0 Galatasaray

We’re crusing now as Liverpool go 3-0 up at Anfield against Galatasaray. Another sublime piece of showmanship from Peter Crouch who loves to attempt those overhead style kicks, succeeding this time under Steve Finnan’s cross. Fair play to Liam Brady and co for calling the 3-0, never saw it coming myself.

Live: Liverpool 2 - 0 Galatasaray

Fourteen minutes gone and Liverpool are in full control, Luis Garcia bagging his first goal of the season with a serious header, the Galatasary keeper taken out of the game with a cross from the near post across the box for Garcia to bullet a header into the roof of the net. I thought the lads in the studio were joking talking of 2-0 and 3-0, if it continues in this vein then Liverpool will be out of sight before too long.

Live: Liverpool 1 - 0 Galatasary

September 27, 2006

Nine minutes gone in the first half and we’ve got our first goal, Fabio Aurelio swinging in a perfect cross from deep on the right to the foot of on the oncoming Crouch, volleying home from six yards out. Some excellent build-up play by the side with Liverpool putting on the pressure early in the game.

Live: Liverpool vs Galatasary (Team)

September 27, 2006

Here’s Liverpool’s team for tonight at Anfield, with the game kicking off in under 10 minutes.

Reina, Finnan, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Pennant, Alonso, Gerrard, Garcia, Kuyt, Crouch.

On the bench we’ve got Dudek, Hyypia, Riise, Gonzalez, Bellamy, Sissoko and Zenden.

No sign of Fowler in the squad and again the changes ring in, Carragher back to start, Riise back on the bench alongside Gonzalez.

Fives and sixes? We’ve got Liverpool who haven’t won or scored in their last five Champions League games and currently lie sixth in the Premier League while Galatasary haven’t won in their last six away games in Europe and currently lie around the same spot in the Turkish league. The lads in the RTE studio seem to think that Liverpool are going to go 2-0 to start with, maybe wrap it up with 3-0. True enough, the buzz around Anfield will be great given the last two games. Its a good thing we didn’t have to travel and disrupt the hype around Anfield for the week. Whether they go that far in the result is one thing but I’m out for a Liverpool win - and finally some European goals - tonight.

Preview: Liverpool vs Galatasaray

September 27, 2006

Tonight marks the second of our Champions League group matches with Galatasary on the table tonight. 93 is the current number of matches that Rafa Benitez has gone without fielding the same team so a little more of the same is expected tonight and with changes on the cards, I’m hopeful that we’ll see Robbie Fowler involved at some stage tonight as the Liverpool squad is pretty much injury free.

We’ve had two good games in the last week, beating Newcastle 2-0 and then topping Spurs 3-0, recording two clean sheets in the process.

The last time the two sides met was five years ago, also in the Champions League. With all four teams on level pegging after Week 1, Week 2 means its still all to play for, only this time we’ve got no Emile Heskey to score against Galatasary. No harm there though. Sorry Emile ;) Benitez is growing fond of the Bellamy-Kuyt partnership, as are some of the players so whether we see more of the same tonight is still up in the air at this stage of the evening. Peter Crouch has been used as a sub in his last four games so it might be nice to throw the big man up front to dislodge some of the Turkish defence.

RTE are bringing the game live from Anfield with kick off at 7:45, coverage begins at 7:30pm on Network 2.

Team news as and when it is announced.
