Don’t Let Anelka Get Away Again

July 20, 2006

Almost two weeks ago I posted an entry here entitled ‘Bring Back Anelka‘.

Two weeks on we’ve got all these reports flying about discussing who the fourth striker is and where they’re going to come from - chief target being Feyenoord’s Dirk Kuyt who are looking for at least £10.3m if not more. The player’s agent has said a move will be refused by the club outright unless their asking fee is met and, coupled with that, I’m not overly fond of letting Jan Kromkamp go from Anfield just yet - even it is to sweeten the deal in our favour.

So out comes Harry Redknapp with the Portsmouth chequebook, Milan Mandaric having sold his remaining stake in the club for £32m. With a rumoured £8.2m bid on the table, Anelka is obviously still a high commodity. But look at his love of Liverpool. To some it might read as a ‘come and get me’ plea. He’s away in Turkey and he’s possibly coming back to a club that has yet to really achieve anything in the Premier League bar managing to survive the past few seasons.

But in Anelka lies a player with a strong love of Liverpool, something that is echoed by the fans. He has the desire to play for the club, the passion to play for the club, and the proven ability to play for the club.

Crouch, Fowler, and Bellamy all have a huge wealth of experience in the English game and where Kuyt might well adapt to it, should the club not be looking to build on someone who already has Premier League experience, Champions League Experience and full international experience. After a while out in the wilds with Fenerbache, Anelka has broken back into the French team (bar missing the World Cup) so is getting regular experience on all levels.

If we need to bring in someone as the fourth club striker, I say save a few million and don’t let Anelka get away again.

Bellamy Delight, Time For Impact

July 20, 2006

Steven Gerrard, Xabi Alonso and Momo Sissoko all have Craig Bellamy as a big fan, and I’m delighted to see it.

  • On Gerrard… “…one of the best midfielders in the world”
  • On Alonso… “I’ve still to see a better passer…He’s an incredible player”
  • On Sissoko… “…awesome when I played against him last year”

Bellamy has spoken out about about his love for the club and his arrival at Liverpool but has now expressed his excitement and delight at linking up with the rest of the squad who return to training this week following a break after the World Cup.

With Bellamy’s determination and pace I’m starting to wonder if we’ll be seeing the new Michael Owen at Liverpool. Bit of a strong comparison to be making at this stage of the game but the potential for a big impact is certainly there.

Bellamy worked out at a goal every other game at Blackburn last season, 13 goals in 27 appearances for the club (while also bagging 7 out of 12 at Celtic) but with the quality of service to the forward line this year through a more matured Alonso and Sissoko, as well as Gerrard I’ve got no doubt that the Welshman will be making big waves at the club this season.

Bellamy will succeed where Cissé failed. The pace is there and the attitude is there, but where Cissé lacked the knowledge and experience of the English game, Bellamy has it in abundance. Time at Coventry, Norwich, Newcastle, Celtic and Blackburn has assured him of this and I’m sharing in his delight of his hook up with the full squad and wish him all the best for the season.

Another goal against Crewe would be just the ticket as well ;)

A Few Years Left In Me - Fowler

July 20, 2006

Robbie Fowler is coming out fighting ahead of the arrival of Liverpool’s fourth striking option as he concentrates on his preseason fitness regime.

According to Fowler…

I’ve got a few years left in me playing at the top level. I want to be at Liverpool for as long as I can and if that means performing as well as I did towards the end of last season to get a new contract then so be it.

Robbie came on at half time against Wrexham at the weekend and picked out Bellamy with a perfect pass just minutes into the second half to set Liverpool on to their second goal of the game.

Making nine league starts since his return in January, Fowler has scored 5 goals but I’ve a feeling we’ll be seeing a good season from him this year now that he is firmly under the eye of Benitez. If he can build on the relationship he seems to be forming with Bellamy then the goals won’t be long in coming.

Unconfirmed : Traoré Signs For Addicks

July 19, 2006

Unconfirmed reports this afternoon (like this one) circling the web announcing that Djimi Traoré has signed for Charlton as of this afternoon in a deal reportedly worth £600k. It had been estimated that the transfer would net Liverpool in the region of £1m thought Traoré was worried that the deal he was on at Liverpool and the proposed fee would price him out of a transfer move.

More details on this as and when they become available.

Kromkamp Making Way For Kuyt?

July 19, 2006

So it looks like Jan Kromkamp is next out the door in the Anfield exodus having only arrived at the club in the last few months to replace Josemi, though “having failed to impress” as the papers are putting it I would have to disagree - I don’t think we should rate him or cast him aside after just 5 months in the league.

Both PSV and Feyenoord are said to be chasing the Dutch right back and according to transfer reports, Kromkamp was initially offered in a cash p/x deal to land Dirk Kuyt earlier this summer but with PSV also upping their interest in the player who has made just 7 full starts for the club (plus 10 off the bench) my guess is that Benitez and co. will look to spark a bidding war for the player, thus lowering the asking price for Kuyt. With Liverpool seemingly the only real contenders for the player’s signature, Feyenoord make well have to reduce their asking price with the player so determined to leave for life in the Premier League.

The deal is set to be bolstered by almost an additional £3m with Djimi Traoré set to walk out of Anfield for £1m with both Wigan and Charlton looking at the French left back, while Antonio Barragan’s £1.7m move to Deportivo should hopefully be completed by this weekend.

Top Seed Spot For Liverpool

July 18, 2006

Great news when you see that Liverpool are going to be among the top seeds for this year’s Group Stage of the Champions League should the club manage to get past the third round, the opposition only being announced next Friday afternoon.

Always the possibility of us seeing Chelsea paired with Barcelona at the Group Stage as Chelsea have yet again been handed a second seed position, having won the Premier League two seasons running.

Being top seeded means that we can avoid Barcelona, Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Arsenal, Man Utd, Valencia and Lyon while also avoiding Chelsea under the country rule. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the likes of Celtic or Roma (remember those great CL games against Roma?) wind up in our group though, both sides ranked among the second seeds.

Trezeguet For Liverpool?

July 16, 2006

He missed a penalty that changed the course of the shootout in the World Cup Final. His club have just been stripped of their last two league titles, kicked out of the Champions League, docked 30 points and they’re starting next season in Serie B - for the first time in over one hundred years of football.

Now might be a good time for David Trezeguet to be considering his future, especially given that Juventus don’t really have a hope of getting back into Serie A at their first attempt.

As much as Didier Deschamps says that any potential suitors for any of the Juventus squad will have to “pay full price”, I don’t think there is any doubt that there will be a mass exodus right out of Turin as the vultures begin to circle the disgraced league champions. Liverpool, are among the chasing bunch too.

“All the Juventus players are good players. They will be a better price now than they would have been three months ago… There are possibilities for a loan arrangement. If there is a good player and he is professional, that is not a problem for me. Trezeguet is one who would be a good player for us.”

All of that according to Rafa Benitez. Trezeguet has been linked of course with a move to Liverpool in the past and would have similar qualities to Nic Anelka, so in that regard I wouldn’t say no. I’m just delighted to see mention of going for a fourth striker and, a positive mention at that.

Another potential transfer target is his team mate Zlatan Ibrahimovic who had somewhat of an indifferent World Cup for Sweden but still has great physical prowess and an eye for the goal. Whatever about the talk in the papers, it is still a matter that Benitez is simply considering, nothing is written in stone.

Alex Ferguson too has revealed that he is currently chasing a holding midfield and striker for United and fully plans to raid the Italian market to replace Ruud Van Nistelrooy before the season with both Trezeguet and Ibrahimovic potential targets, so there is good chance that we might see at least one of the pair if not both making waves in the Premier League this coming season.

Trezeguet would certainly be a good purchase for Liverpool, either on a season long loan deal or as a permanent move. Just shy of 100 goals for Juventus in 151 games, he’s averaged 20 goals a season, is a proven striker on the league and World Stage and I don’t think fans would say no to his arrival either. As to whether Juventus would actually give him up is another thing but if they do - with Dirk Kuyt looking like at least a 10 million purchase - I think we might well see the chequebook open for this Frenchman.
