Don’t Let Anelka Get Away Again
Almost two weeks ago I posted an entry here entitled ‘Bring Back Anelka‘.
Two weeks on we’ve got all these reports flying about discussing who the fourth striker is and where they’re going to come from - chief target being Feyenoord’s Dirk Kuyt who are looking for at least £10.3m if not more. The player’s agent has said a move will be refused by the club outright unless their asking fee is met and, coupled with that, I’m not overly fond of letting Jan Kromkamp go from Anfield just yet - even it is to sweeten the deal in our favour.
So out comes Harry Redknapp with the Portsmouth chequebook, Milan Mandaric having sold his remaining stake in the club for £32m. With a rumoured £8.2m bid on the table, Anelka is obviously still a high commodity. But look at his love of Liverpool. To some it might read as a ‘come and get me’ plea. He’s away in Turkey and he’s possibly coming back to a club that has yet to really achieve anything in the Premier League bar managing to survive the past few seasons.
But in Anelka lies a player with a strong love of Liverpool, something that is echoed by the fans. He has the desire to play for the club, the passion to play for the club, and the proven ability to play for the club.
Crouch, Fowler, and Bellamy all have a huge wealth of experience in the English game and where Kuyt might well adapt to it, should the club not be looking to build on someone who already has Premier League experience, Champions League Experience and full international experience. After a while out in the wilds with Fenerbache, Anelka has broken back into the French team (bar missing the World Cup) so is getting regular experience on all levels.
If we need to bring in someone as the fourth club striker, I say save a few million and don’t let Anelka get away again.

Got something to say?

I completely agree with you on this one. Anelka has clearly expressed how much he wanted to stay at Liverpool — and how disappointed he was that Houllier didn’t offer him a contract. Unlike Kuyt, furthermore, Anelka is proven in the Premiership. He (Anelka) has pace, finishing skills and is an excellent passer of the ball.
Is Anelka’s attitude something to worry about? Something tells me that Rafa’s man-management skills could sort him out.
I don\’t even think his attitude is a problem and if anything over his time at City and Fenerbache (and making amends with Ray Domenech) that he\’s curtailing any attitude problem he might have had. If it was my cheque book I would have no hesitation in making the purchase whatsoever! If the title push is to go ahead this season then everyone needs to be tried and tested. It didn\’t work at all with Morientes, same with Cissé (which was a pity) and I would fear that it might be the same with Kuyt.
